Surface Duo In 2024 | Why Its Still Relevant

Today I reviewed the Surface Duo 1. This is an incredible device that defies the law of time. Despite its bad reputation when initially released, this device has completely done a 180. With new firmware updates and patches, the Surface Duo has now become a reliable contender. Although not ideal to be a smartphone because of size, this device would be the perfect digital pocketbook or fordable tablet. But the best news is the price, the Surface Duo 1 ranges in price from $250- $400. Now for a device that originally cost $1400, that's a huge steal. I would definitely recommend this device to businessmen & women who are on the go, or anyone looking to have a secondary device.

I already had the Fold 4 but I got the opportunity to buy the duo for $250 brand new unlocked so I did it thinking I would return it. Oh my gosh I love the duo. As of right now I'm using as my main device. I love the dual screens, it's more than fast enough and for the pics I take and calls I make it works just fine. It's becoming harder to find but for $250? One of my greatest purchases ever

Just got my Duo won a couple days ago and I'm absolutely loving it so far. The software bugs are still there but a lot of it seems to be getting fixed and I've had a really solid bunch of use cases already!

Being a frequent, on-the-go traveler, the Surface Duo G1 has been a great travel device for me. It's been a great portable Microsoft Teams meeting device for my business meetings when I'm traveling. I've used it as a music player or audio book connected to a bluetooth speaker.

It's been great as a pocketable e-reader at the airport and a great video consumption device on planes that only have BYOD wi-fi entertainment. The dual screens allow me to sit it on the tray table OR hook it to the magazine pocket / magazine holder bar for plane seats without a seat-back device mount. It's been a great mobile entertainment device for me.

It's has been great for the occasional phone calls I've made on it while I was charging my primary phone. I have a cheap $10/month prepaid phone plan on it with 2GB of data. I've even used it as a dual-screen GPS device using Google Maps when I've driven a vehicle without an infotainment/GPS system.

I like the truly dual screen devices like this. I wish MSFT had released the Surface Neo also, a bigger tablet PC version of the Duo that would have run Windows OS.

Hi Mark, would the Gen 1 Surface Duo still hold up for basic apps such as WhatsApp, emails, YouTube etc?

I had the original Duo and now I have the Duo 2. What's the issue using it as a phone??? I use it every day as a phone. In fact, it's my only phone. It is my primary device, not secondary. Love it!

Had mine for a year now and where ever I go people say that is cool what is it. The duo is awesome to use. YouTube on one side and Disney + on the other side its amazing multi-tasking!!!

Agree. I still use mine that I bought since launch… I use it as a digital notebook and language learning tool. I love that it folds flat all the way around with no camera bump.
Only thing I don’t like, is that you can’t split screen for 4 total apps.

I've been looking at picking one of these up, as I personally think this is the form factor that "foldables" should be adopting.
I really appreciate you taking the time to give updates on these "older" devices, as it cements my future purchase that much more.

I have both Duo 1 & 2 (Business & Personal). They are both my daily drivers. I could not go back to a candy bar type with only a single screen. Having two screens to work on is just great. As a phone... not so great... I carry both in my pockets with no problem...Great device.... not so great phone...

I am contemplating buying a Surface duo instead of a tablet because those tab s series are insanely pricey. I primarily want it for reading books PDFs. Would it be a great buy?

From August 2021 to March 2024, the Duo 1 was my primary phone and it was incredible. It's still in my bag as a digital notebook. The hate that it received was warranted only for the first few months, but that's the price you pay to be an early adopter.

It's a lovely device. Terrible phone but a lovely pocket computer to carry as a second device. I also have a Fold 4 yet use the Duo most of the time. I like the clean lines of the original Duo more than the Duo 2. Current price is just fantastic. Easy to grab new for 300.

I have mine from day 1, I don't use as a phone only because I am a handyman and don't want to destroy it, but I definitely use it as my tablet and run my business with it.

I have had my 1st Gen Surface Duo for almost 3 years now, and I love it! THERE IS NO DRAMA with this device! It just works. It does what it's supposed to do and it does it well. After three years, about the only drawback I am seeing is that the battery life is JUST BEGINNING to degrade. I was getting a solid 3-days on a charge, now it's just under two. I wish Microsoft would continue to support the platform - would be nice to upgrade to Android 13 or 14.

I just bought the Duo 1 last week for mostly the same reasons, price and rarity. As a tech enthusiast it was sub $300 after tax and I decided it was worth it just to have the experience and almost as a collectable to join m Zune HD & Dock. I agree with a lot of your points! It's a fun secondary intake device for me. It's more enjoyable reading on a wider screen and it's more than capable and works smoothly as with your experience (only minor things here and there). My plan is to use it as a pocketable learning device that I can listen/watch content and update notes or brainstorm side by side while walking and hitting my daily steps. Wasn't expecting it, but it's the best device I have (compared to Galaxy Note+ or Ipad mini) for that exact purpose. I agree, worth a visit if you like tech toys and have the funds to spare. I love my Duo 1. I dopped it, glass cracked, no 5G. So I am forced to go ZFold for now. But, I was holding out HOPING a 3 would be out. I am sad because the Duo worked exactly they way I like/need to work. The ability to function as two screens is SO important to me. Grrr!
