Extension tubes are similar to using crop mode on a full frame camera. Instead of using a smaller portion of the sensor however, extension tubes make you use a smaller portion of the circle of light, that the lens creates.
It's pretty simple. Imagine a flashlight shining light on a wall. If you move it further away, the circle of light gets bigger but dimmer.
The same thing happens with extension tubes. They make the lens cast a bigger circle of light. The sensor doesn't change in size of course and therefore now captures a smaller portion of it, which will reduce brightness and sharpness of the image.

I’m glad I found this because I have that lens and I wanted to see what tubes would look like on it

my 85mm prime lens is so clear but with my crop sensor camera, the focal length is just too high💀i might try an extension tube to shorten it and then i can use that lens more

I'm trying to take photos of coins very close up with my iPhone but with the macro lenses, I have to get quite close to the subject to get a clear picture which doesn't give me much choices for lighting. Also, the coin in its entirety is never fully in crisp focus where there is always a part tat is a bit blurry. Would it make sense to use a telephoto lens instead or am I confused on how a telephoto lens works? Thanks for any help
