Still Wakes the Deep Review "Buy, Wait for Sale, Gamepass or pass"
STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.

You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

Best for on sale or gamepass and be aware gamepass has less upscaling choices.
A great game in the genre but one that doesn't do anything new.

A rare instance of the walking sim/horror game that actually has fully modelled, voiced and animated NPCs.
That alone is enough to sell me on this type of game. Really refreshing to see. So tired of the decades of these types of games where everyone's already dead/missing, and you're the lone survivor.
Will definitely check it out when I get the chance.

I don't understand the part about replayability. You replay a game because you want to relive the experience/story again. No need for things in the game to change, although it's a nice plus (personally though, i tend to make the same choices, if i liked how my previous playthrough felt, that's the reason i replay it after all). It's like with a movie - you watch it again, because you want to experience it again, maybe a year later.

Really curious how this was developed alongside Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. Did they make most of this before taking on the job or did development start after? It looks way better than the footage they showed of Bloodlines 2, although I’m pretty sure they are reusing assets Hardsuit Labs made for that game.

I'm so happy you're reviewing this. Let's sea how it is.

If Chinese Room could combine its obvious talent for immersion, writing, detail and voice work with the gameplay and exploration of something like an Alien Isolation then we would have game of the year contenders. The almost brutal realism of this game just adds to the horror and some scenes are genuinely disturbing and not in that "fun" horror way. You can clearly see the influence of Carpenters The Thing with the body horror but also with the tension, banter and the isolation.

It's nice to have genuine Scottish accents in a game and not some Shrek like bad imitation. +1 star for that alone.

I've been looking forward to this one, glad to hear that it seems to be exactly what I was hoping for it to be.

On a different note, it feels like you are talking a tiny bit slower in this review. Whether intentional or not, I think it's a good thing as it allows for more time to process all the information and thus results in a better listening experience. Keep it up!

This one's akin to say SOMA for me (considering a story mode for accessibility as well), looks like a lot of dynamic sequences and an engaging story. Then I can see a few chase sequences. No weapons for defence, but a few distractions u can make

The star of this game is the environment. The rig, the people and the monster.
The game itself is closer to an interactive rollercoaster.
Enjoyable, but you're kind of along for the ride.
Definitely worth experiencing if you've got gamepass, and does a great job making you feel deeply uneasy most of the time.
Oh, and the unapologetically Scottishness and constant swearing are great too.

There’s a recent Netflix UK series about an oil rig in the
North Sea that also undergoes a mysterious intrusion called
The Rig.

What I did not quite get is: are there chase sequences, just like in Layers of Fear 2 or are you hunted like in Alien isolation?
Are you required to hide from monsters otherwise it's game over?
Because that's not what I would associate with a walking sim, as I'm thinking more of LoF1, Firewatch, Dear Esther, rachel foster, etc.

But if you're just losing characters to monsters, just as in something like The Quarry, that would be pretty cool.

Would be nice if someone could enlighten me on that

$35 is a bit on the steep end for a 5-ish hour experience but I want to support devs that put these kinds of games out so I'll give it a try.
A short finely-tuned narrative horror experience is right up my alley and I want to see more like it!

setting alone is worth a look i think. seems to be a pretty solid game

Reviews are really starting to have a “Chris Stuckmann” type vibe to them. Why not state whether or not you think we should buy the game? The gamepass quip seems like a bit of a cop out to me. Sounds like you wanted to say “wait for a sale”, but just weren’t willing to actually say it.

This is such a cool setting for a game. Surprised it hasn't been done more in the past.

I love all the games from The Chinese Room. Is this on the same level or is a less?

For me, this wasn't so much a game as an interactive movie. And it that context it was one of the most immersive, suspenseful and touching experiences I've had in 45 years of game-play.
Uniquely in my view, the voice acting, script, sound and graphics are all very, very strong; no weaknesses, no single one letting the others down. And the attention to detail.. that just blew my mind away.
Hardened horror gamers won't be hugely impressed, nor will preferrers of more open-world, choice-driven games.
But then again, this isn't a game. It's an experience, and an absolutely top shelf one at that.

You can rearrange the title of this game in almost almost any way and it still works. The Still Wakes Deep. Wake The Deep Still. The Wake, Still Deep.
