Phil's relationship with his dad was amazing. So pure and of what I remember always a positive vibe. I was always scared for Phil to lose his best friend and role model.. They had best dad/son relationship I could imagine. "You've left some big footprints my old man" had me really going 😅

I think the relationship the writers depicted between Phil and his father, and then emulated with Phil and his son in the series was wonderful. The unconditional love and acceptance of the biological father and the constant pursuit of acceptance by the father-in-law which he so craved and never got. I saw the actress that played Haley commented that she wasn't in the scene, but I didn't see the new wife there either.

It was honestly perfect casting making Fred Willard Phil Dunphy's dad. Both the actors are very good at playing average, humble dudes with big personalities and a lot of charisma.
I was part of the generation who would have remembered Fred Willard more for his voice acting roles in cartoons than his comedic roles in live action, but it hurts whenever I remember he's gone. Every so often I imagine he's going to be in another thing. It makes no sense because I'm just a fan, but I'm really going to miss him
