Joni Mitchell released Blue, concluding her prolific four album run for Reprise Records with an album considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Its stirring, confessional songs have been celebrated by music lovers and critics alike for decades while inspiring a wide variety of artists as diverse as Prince and Taylor Swift. Even today, its stature as a masterpiece continues to grow. Just last year, the album was named #3 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

To celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, Rhino is releasing THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971), the next installment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series, featuring newly remastered versions of Blue (1971) and the three albums that came before it: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969), and Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). In the case of Song To A Seagull, the original mix has been recently updated by Mitchell and mixer Matt Lee.

The cover art for THE REPRISE ALBUMS (1968-1971) features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period. The collection also includes an essay by Grammy winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, another artist who’s been influenced greatly by Mitchell.

She is 70 and I’m 56. I am so blessed to have grown up with parents who listened to this music. It is truly the best.

"Blue" has got to be one of the best albums ever, but then all Joni's albums were the best ever.

We are of the same generation, and I am so thankful I got to walk this earth the same time as Miss Joni Mitchell, because the likes of her will not come along our way again. She has indeed kept a lot of us on our feet.

For anyone who wants to read for me this song....

He just got off work me. Lying on my back and his head rested between my boobs. Arms wrapped around me. Only 2 pillar candles lighting the room. His eyes closed me singing the song word-for-word.
I tickled him with the tips of my fingers on his head, his ears, neck. And tears silently rolling out of my eyes and my thought was "Oh my God, if i died right now i would die happy. This safe feeling, this comfort and happiness that almost makes me sick because it's so foreign to me. And i remember thinking this is what being in love and being loved back feels like". It was truly one of the happiest moments of my life, listening to this song. Now, every time I hear this song its like a dull knife being twisted in an old wound. God, wanting to go back to that exact moment.
She says it best when she says so bitter sweet!

Can easily make an argument that this is the greatest song ever written.

Achingly lovely. How strange and wonderful life is that Prince’s admiration of her led me here. Thankful.

Lyrics:
Just before our love got lost you said,
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, "Constantly in the darkness,
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar."

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh, Canada
With your face sketched on it twice.

Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh, I would still be on my feet

Oh, I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints.
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid.

I remember that time you told me
You said, "Love is touching souls."
Surely you touched mine.
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time.

Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet.
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds.
And she said, "Go to him, stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed."

Oh, but you are in my blood
You're my holy wine
You're so bitter
Bitter and so sweet.
Oh, I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Veel mooier zal het nooit meer worden! Ik heb 30 jaar terug dit op cd grijs gedraaid met mijn toenmalige kortstondige vriendin aan de andere kant van de telefoonlijn. En daar hoorde je dan dezelfde muziek...

I count as one of the best things I've done was to start listening to Joni Mitchell. I'm sure that I am not alone when I say she tells the story of lot of my life with her words.

It never fails that every time I hear this song, I think of the scene from Practical Magic with Nicole Kidman singing along with it in the car, as the sun sets and rises during her journey. I think that has become my default memory because her energy and emotions encapsulate the vibe and feel of this song. It was such a perfect marriage of music and story; it has been engraved in my memory and will be forever married to each other. <3

How is it even possible to write, compose and sing something so divine?

The entire "Blue" album gets under your skin and this song caps it off beautifully.

Transposing her Appalachian dulcimer to my guitar with this tune back in the seventies was fun and became one of my favorite of my repertoire.I played it for my niece and she loves it.
