Asics Metaspeed Edge Paris vs Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris: Two runners pick their favourite racer

Asics has launched two great carbon plate racing shoes this year, but which should you get? In theory the Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris is for bounding runners and the Asics Metaspeed Edge Paris is for those with a high-cadence style, but in reality it’s not that simple as to which might be the best shoe for you. Mike and Nick talk through their experience with the shoes in this video, and say which is their favourite.

Check out our full reviews of both shoes:

The point of the Sky is to provide as much equal bounce in every foot strike, while the point of the edge is to make you turn over as quickly and as efficiently as possible. There’s a reason the previous edge versions had a smaller stack and firmer foam. ASICS isn’t very far off in the marketing, but it really has nothing to do with cadence or stride, rather it’s just strictly bounce vs aggressive turnover

Thanks for this review RunTesters, I've been waiting for the comparison!

I have had the Sky Paris for a while now, and got the Edge Paris yesterday after trying them in a store. They are really similar, but for me, the Sky Paris is a bit taxing on my calves due to the higher forefoot. The Edge Paris has less of that forefoot lift, and it felt more comfortable to me. I can’t say which is faster, but they really are so similar that you can’t go wrong with either. Truth to be told I got the second pair more out of curiosity than a significant difference between them.

Interesting conclusions between these two, and curious that the Asics pros seem to slightly favour the Edge. Can I ask does it feel more stable/less narrow in the heel than a Vaporfly 2?

Clayton Young said that he slightly preferred the ride of the Edge however he found out he is slightly more efficient in the Sky. So he will wear the Sky (He’s a forefoot striker)

I tried the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Race Shoes at the shoe store (Fleet Feet) after watching a previous review by the Run Testers and I must say, it was so light, soft, comfy and bouncy as I hopped up and down in them to get a feel it. As a first timer, I will say the foam felt like a hybrid of the Nike ZoomX foam and the FF BLAST+ which is my understanding of what Asics means when they say FFTurbo+. My feet size is exactly 10.5 in (26.67 cm) and width is 4 in (10.16 cm). I also have a normal arch, supinate (underpronate), a midfoot striker and normally wear a U.S 9.5 (UK 8.5/Euro 43). I have come to the conclusion that Nick and Mike have a smaller and narrow feet because I had to size up to a 10 US in the Metaspeed Edge Paris (US 9.5 fit like a US 9)! Maybe with time the upper (motion wrap) will stretch out a bit with usage but that is a gamble as far as I am concerned. Lastly, the heel outsole has absolutely zero protection so to all my heel strikers...good luck!

I don't buy into all that marketing jargon: cadence runner vs stride runner. My local running shoe store had both the Sky Paris and the Edge Paris on the shelf. I put on one pair and ran around the block. I put on the other pair and ran around the block. Then I put on one shoe on the left foot, and the other shoe on the right foot and ran around the block. Then I switched shoes on the other feet and ran around the block. As a mid-to-forefoot runner, the winner for me was the Sky Paris.

The whole concept of one shoe being better suited for one running style & vice versa put me off from buying either shoe entirely. I wasn’t prepared to essentially gamble on one of them, so I opted for the Puma DNE3 instead and I’m very happy with my decision. In theory, the Edge would suit me better as a high cadence runner, but every reviewer pretty much preferred the Sky regardless of running style, which put too much doubt in my mind

I really think they should stick with just one shoe, or at the very least make one a different colour from the other

Hey Nick, any chance your %change in stride is greater than the %change in cadence, when compared to an easy day shoe? Trying to find the real measure of “stride” runner vs “cadence” runner.

I guess what it boils down to is if you prefer a bouncier, softer ride (Sky) or a firmer, ground feel ride (Edge).

Thanks for thre review! Which one would you place closer to the Endorphin Pro 3 (or Pro4)? I have the Sky+ and find it a bit exhausting to run since one needs clean runing style (midfoot landing), which can be tough on long distance...I love it as long as I can run with proper technique. Sounds like the Edge Paris may be more of a rolling style. I am mid-foot striker with supination. Thanks

Increasing cadence and having a high cadence are not the same thing. I could cruise at 140 and increase to 200 or I could cruise at 190 and increase to 200. For whom of these would the edge be best for? Edge would suit the first case, not the second if Asics explanation is to make sense. Is there a small cadence gap between Nick’s slower pace and higher pace?

I've got both.... for me there's a change over depending upon distance... edge with the lower plate and more ground feel and quicker turnover is better for anything up to 10k and quicker 10k up over the sky as I feel like they give more protection with more foam between plate n ground and better energy ... I know people have mentioned the sky feeling firmer with the high plate but I found the opposite, and with a lower plate like the edge I get more impact overall across the run but that's the trade off with more ground feel and quicker turnover.... the edge feel a bit more like the quick ride in the vaporfly 2s... sky a bit more

Very helpful video!
I've ordered both from Asics with the intention of trying them both, finding which I prefer, then returning the other. Asics say that returns can be made up to 90 days.

My question is, what condition can i return the shoes back to Asics?

If i take both the Edge & the + for trial runs there are bound to be some marks left on the sole. Will Asics still accept returns after a couple of runs? Thanks

Just a general question for a guy who has a smaller feet. Incase there isn’t a size available for you in the mens. Would you consider wearing womens size shoe? Is there a difference between mens vs womens shoe?

how does the length compare to the vaporfly 3?

Bought the edge Paris as a midfoot striker, havnt gotten on with it at all after about 70ks of speed workouts. I havnt tried the sky, but I much prefer the alphafly 3 to the edge. Unsure if I’m willing to buy the sky now seeing as the plate placement feels more like the alphafly 3. I’m a big asics fan boy and love the Superblast and novablast 4 so the edge was a big disappointment for me

I have not tried these low drop super shoes . But for my daily trainers that I have used over the years, the one that makes my cadance gets boosted up are those 12mm drop shoes. In special the Mizuno Wave Rider that is very stable and with the high drop makes my Achilles to work faster with easy !

Certainly Sky Paris is an ultracomfy and fast shoe. But only one question, is Edge Paris similar on feel to Sky Tokio?
