In Malaysia, we called it "Saka". It is considered a guardian spirit that was passed from generation to generation. The saka helps the 'owner' do daily tasks and routines.

Many modern Malaysian nowadays have cast out these attached spirits using Islamic or Buddhist methods of exorcism. It is quite common not just in Indonesia and Malaysia, but also in Singapore, Thailand and Brunei and it usually happens among Muslim Malays or Chinese families.

Indonesian here. It's common for some maids from Indonesia to have guardian spirit with him/her when they go abroad.
I know this from some of our relatives who work in immigration beureu and some of my friends from Saudi Arabia.
They bring it for such a good luck or something, despite of it is forbidden in our religion

In Indonesia+malaysia region, people would have a guardian because of 2 reasons. One is because their ancestors were royal blooded and the jin used to lived in their kingdoms, so the jin become their protectors. And the other reason is either he/she or his/her ancestor went to meet a witch and bought a jinn to do what they want, the jinn later been called Saka. From my opinion as a malaysian boy, the protector of the royals wont harm unless if you threaten the owner, but Saka, if the owner want you to be dead, the Saka will kill you.
