Just for context, there were about 10 channels that did chess streams daily in 2018-19, Hikaru being the main one ofc. And now there are about 100 concurrent streams, all thanks to this guy. Its surprising how chesscom never fails to take credit.

They probably meant that Hikaru being a Twitch celebrity and a chess grandmaster is improbable because before the boom in chess on Twitch, chess has been seen (and is still seen this way by elitists) as some formal and professional game. This is in stark contrast to Twitch being a more loose and laidback platform full of memes and jokes.

i think it shows that people enjoy using their brains, that should be a positive for anyone tbh, no matter how “dumb” you perceive someone to be. mostly i think its people who are a bit cranky because people are getting attention for amateur chess, when they have spent thousands of hours to appreciate and play serious chess. it’s understandable but its also dumb, people should be able to enjoy and improve at anything they can and want to, regardless of level, the professional community should turn that into a strength instead of a problem.
