One thing I have noticed whenever professionals cover M*A*S*H is that they automatically forget that it's a "period comedy", it may have been made in the 70's but it was set in the 1950's, before a lot of the modern medical practices were implemented/conceived in a civilian setting let alone a war zone.

I've watched one medical professional roast EVERY single surgery scene completely from a "in a hospital we wouldn't so why is it happening here" mentality. I'm glad that you guys didn't do that.

The team behind M*A*S*H prided themselves on getting medical experts on the consulting team for the series and also went through painstaking research when it came to medical procedures and their history.

Again though, I love your videos and I'm really glad you actually covered this taking the era it's set into account.

This show is about a "meatball surgery" MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit that existed during the Korean Conflict (1950-1953) The Heimich maneuver was first introduced in 1974.

The thing about that appendix scene is that they knew the man wasn’t sick. They gave him some thing to make him feel sick, then Hawkeye did the appendectomy to keep that man off the front line so he wouldn’t get his own men killed.

You have to take into account that it's set during the Korean War and MASH was the infancy of military care in the field and techniques were new and not prevalent or fine tuned as we see today.

Keep in mind this setting is 1950-53... A lot of stuff you think is obvious was just being developed at the time.

Just pointing out Mash is based on the Korean War 51-53 and they were using leftover military gear from the 40s

The context of the appendix episode is important. Hawkeye knew there was nothing wrong with the appendix before he went in (nothing to do with what was mentioned here), it was a plan to get the guy removed as commander as his tactics were getting men killed. BJ was against the idea morally since removing a healthy appendix would be contrary to the oath.

So, some few helpful information: Mash takes place during the Korean War (50s). The show was made in the 70s. MASH stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. They were located around 3-5 miles away from the front lines.

The first clip of the Tracheostomy has Father Mulcahy a priest, and Radar a corporal. They were getting a man from an aid station (1-3 miles away from the front lines) to the MASH unit.

If you want a M*A*S*H fan who can give important information just let me know

IIRC, Penicillin was a new thing then, and they couldn't always get it. I believe sulfa drugs were used.
They had an episode where they didn't have anesthesia and had to use ether.

The research the writers did was to interview veteran soldiers that fought in the war. The series lasted a lot longer than the war itself.

But if you think about it, not so. Every soldier and military person had a story to tell.
Work is often measured in man hours. That means, for example, that 2 people working an eight hour shift give you 16 man hours.

So however many service people served would give you that many "service-person wars, " fängt More than just the length of the war itself.

Yes!! I've been waiting for a M*A*S*H video; and specifically I wanted to hear about the episode where the Father does tracheotomy on the jeep. Thank you! And yes, more M*A*S*H vidz in the future!

I have to say for how light hearted this episode is, it is also a pretty brutal one hearing how the military has to cobble together materials to save someone.

The intro song is still one of the most peaceful yet sad songs i've ever heard

Most of the medical care in the era the show was set in was pretty much "Patch 'em up and send 'em back out" level of care, even if it was utterly wrong on all kinds of levels (medically, ethically, morally, etc.), just one of those things about war that is just what they do... :S

Regarding the Heinlich maneuver, would it have been invented yet in the 1950-52 timeframe that the show was based on ?

Remember the first scene you have the company clerk and unit chaplain, neither of whom have any training beyond "Scream for a medic". The chaplain wasn't even cleared for field work at all, and conned his way on the run to get credibility with wounded soldiers by having actually been at a front line unit.
The second was an officer who just threw soldiers into the line of fire getting huge casualties, and Hawkeye was trying to knock him off the front line.
