Want to power a mini PC with Power Over Ethernet (POE)? No problem!

*Note: Be sure to check your device for the appropriate voltage and wattage. As with all power adapters, using something that isn't intended for your device can break your device, switch, or both!*

Those adapters are game changers! I've used them to power ipad based home assistant dashboards, my philips hue and samsung smartthings hubs, as well as to power led lights in my wardrobe. All from a single unifi poe switch. Home assistant turns the ipad port on and off at different battery levels to prevent overcharging. Everything works like a dream.

The Zimaboard has pinouts for power switch/light and hard drive activity/light (just to right of pcie port) It's documented on their site. I bought a button/light combo unit that hooked up to mine so I can control it that way. I soldered some pinouts so the button/light combo can be removed.

Wish it supported PoE out of the box without the barrel plugin, but oh well, that's still a good solution, you just don't have to rely on the managed switch always too.

As an Amateur Radio Operator, I already have 12V power supplies that run my radios so I just pull 12V from there to power my Zimaboards and the miniPCs. Not only can I do that in my shack but I can do in my car or at an activity that is very popular in the Ham world called Parks on the Air where we take our equipment out to parks. So these 12V PCs are a great option for us when we operate in disaster zones where the power is out. But, that is a BIG rabbit hole to go down.

POE works for SOME DEVICES. Make sure you know how much volts / amps the device draws and how much your switch supports. 5 volts @ .5 amps -vs- 2 amps is a big difference.

I power a Pi 4 in an Argon case, a Pi Zero 2, an IKEA Dirigera hub from my Unifi 16 port switch. So much neater than power adaptors

Joys of being in the UK. We have switches on our outlets 😂

I've been hunting for a POE to type C that retains ethernet and power. I find lots that do one or the other, but finding an adapter that can do BOTH is tricky.

I want to power tablets mounted to the wall (acting as dashboards for home assistant). Would make my life way easier if I just had to run ethernet to each spot in the house!

Plus you can make a script to bounce the port if the device stops communicating. Honestly everything that can should be capable of being powered off PoE IMO.

Yeah, POE is king, it saved me so much time when installing cameras is corporate setting, some more advanced versions of the standard can provide ungodly amount of power, like 60-100w, if I remember right.

You can send an ssh command to unifi switches to shut down PoE ports. I have my NUT server shut down all my cameras this way to extend my runtime.

A lot of those also allow control by console/ssh. Great for automation. And it has overpower protection. Often you can also automatically restart the device if its not reachable by ping.

However, DO NOT USE A REALLY OLD POE SWITCH for that, some older models need a ton of power in idle, I had a Powerconnect 48port gigabit poe switch with 60w idle in the past. In some cases, a Network controlled PDU may be the better solution.

FYI Most PoE do NOT support Gigabit. That's usually found on the commercial/enterprise level.

That specific model works great, until you need HDMI, then it shorts out, because it's not grounded. I've used these quite a bit for headless devices, but once you need video, you need a bigger/grounded PoE splitter.

Last time I checked, the spec for proper POE hubs was to put out 48V. But the typical barrel-plug device is looking for 6, 12, or possibly 9 volts. YMMV.

I literally saw this on Amazon today and was damn that’s a good idea

Or you could setup homeassistant and a smart button to turn off and on the power on the port. Much more clean.

IMPORTANT NOTE for all viewers and @TechnoTim

Recommended power specs as per Zimaboard is 12V X 3A. But, splitter you featured is capped till 2.4A and that too its not available via link you provided on Amazon and i couldn't find nowhere with 12V X 3A with 5.5 X 2.5mm
