There's this common myth that your 20s is the time you should be getting ahead in life, but Reid Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn at 35, Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in his 40s, Margaret Atwood published her first book at 32 - it's not a race to the finish line. Clip taken from Season 2 Episode 3 of Deep Dive.

🎙 ABOUT THE PODCAST

1. The trap: thinking that life can only be enjoyed when X is achieved.
2. The truth: your life is already complete right in this moment and is to be enjoyed right now, the journey is the goal.

The whole experimenting in your 20s is a great idea as long as there are some fundamentals in place. Enough savings to keep you afloat when you don’t have an income, a rough overarching goal you’re trying to achieve and, most importantly, a healthy mind which doesn’t fall into the comparison trap. Everyone knows comparing yourself to other ‘successful’ people is wrong deep down but we all do it it’s genuinely ingrained in us. That is the hardest thing to conquer for me.

If you're living in a poor household, there's no room for messing around. When you're family depends on you right after you graduate, experimenting is insanity. You have to have a job whatever the fck that is or else you'll starve to death. You can't do much if you're on survival mode and financially unstable. Get a job even if you don't like it while saving some money. If your savings is enough to cover months of expenses then take that experimentation thingy.

This video helped me quite a bit. As a 20 year old man, I often fear what my life is going to be like in the next 10 years time and if I'll be in a dead-end job that I hate with no money. I reckon there are a lot of people my age who don't know what direction to take in thier lives or feel as though they're at a stalemate.

I wish I'd known this earlier: I didn't start experimenting until last year when I was 27 and already my life has improved, new opportunities are landing. I've still got my Consulting career but I've learnt there's more than one way to 'set yourself up for success' and more than one way to define 'success'. Excited to keep following the path

I definitely agree with experimenting where possible but also in low risk ways before launching fully into new paths. Both Ali and Hannah went into YouTube full time only after doing it for a while and realising there was great potential in it for them. I think the more you try it out the better you'll be able to gauge if it's for you.
I'm enjoying creating videos and uploading them on YouTube. I'm slowly working my way to the point where I could confidently do it full time if I chose to.

As a 22 years old I want to be a professor in English literature and I always keep myself recharged and positive to feel that I will reach my goal one day.

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I like to experiment and was very much doing that for the last few years. But recently some mistakes and my neglect of certain other aspects of my career have caught up to me and have come back to bite me in the a$$. So that experimenting attitude didn't work out, at least speaking from where I am in life at the moment and I would advise anyone to be cautious because preparation is better than regret. Maybe in a few years' time, it won't be cause for regret and I'll be glad to have taken the time to experiment. Will have to wait and see. All I can do is not lose hope.

Totally needed to hear this

As a 24 year old, I have been a pilot without questioning myself about it since I was 20... until recently that I realised for the first time that there are a lot of other things that I want to do... and that there is a posibility for me to quit my job as a pilot or at least pause it to follow this other paths...

Interesting, I've definitely done a lot of experimentation in my twenties but sometimes I ask myself whether it would have been better to have just stuck with medicine. I think only time will tell. But it's never too late to reinvent yourself, as long as you're still breathing you have another chance. And I love the idea of following older women, if I ever download instagram again I'll probably start doing this.
