Do you know what "chuffed," "torched," or "naff" mean? If you're scratching your head, you may want to brush up on this British slang before heading to the UK. Julie Montagu, host of An American Aristocrat's Guide to Great Estates, is here to help.

A bit of clarification needed. ‘Flog’ and ‘sell’ are very similar but the contexts in which they are used are different and there are subtle nuances of meaning. ‘Flog’ carries with it the sense of something slightly underhand, of selling things of dubious origin from the back of a truck. You wouldn’t normally say ‘In December they flogged £3, 000, 000 of mink coats in Harrods.’ But you might say ‘He flogged the fake Rolex watches from a stall in Petticoat Lane market’. You can use it more generally when talking about selling things of not particularly high value or social esteem. ‘I flogged all my old vinyl LPs in the ‘90s and now I deeply regret it.’ But you wouldn’t say ‘I flogged my Rolls Royce Silver Shadow last week for £2.5 million.’

Good thing we have an American “aristocrat” to teach us British slang. Are you guys running out of content ideas?

"Torch"? That's not even slang. That's the standard use of the word. That's like saying "biscuit" is "British slang" for what we Americans call a "cookie." The same with "flat" for "apartment", "lift" for "elevator", etc..

A little different slang than when I was over there 45 years ago. 😁

If we say cell phone they probably think I’m talking about some kinda batteries. And if you need batteries you ask for cell. 🤣

Do the Brits have the same curiosity about American slang or is American culture so pervasive there's no mystery?
