What if Dinosaurs Survived?

What if a meteorite hadn't hit the Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago? Would dinosaurs have continued to evolve? Would they have walked among us?

This video looks at an amazing and controversial thought experiment, by former Museum palaeontologist Dr. Dale Russell. He discovered that some dinosaurs, like Troodon, were far brainier than first thought. He developed a dinosauroid model that was a hypothetical evolved form of Troodon. Hear Dr. Russell describe the features of this striking cross between a dinosaur and a human.

This video is the first episode in the Museum's new "Naturally Weird & Wonderful" series.

Really interesting. I remember seeing the “evolved troodon” at the museum in the 80s, and being inspired by the thought experiment. I don’t think I ever really bought the anthropocentric aspects of the model - but I loved the thought that scientists would play with ideas like this.

Very well done! Dale Russell would have liked this even-handed treatment of his thought experiment.

I like to think that some species did survive and evolve like this. As it was so long ago, thinking about the advancements Humans have made in such a short space of time, maybe this explains all of those ancient technologies. Maybe it explains the "little green men" Aliens. What if they advanced and developed space travel and are just historians.

I was always intrigued by the dinosauroid as a kid. Now knowing that troodontids were most likely feathered, it is believed that an intelligent dinosaur would have retained its natural bird-like shape.

Hasn't the Stenonychosaurus been recongnised as seperate from Troodon in 2017? I was wondering where Herman went, I've heard he used to be on display at the museum in Ottawa but I've never seen him on any of my many visits to the museum. Apparently he's been hiding at the Gatineau campus.
