Aircraft engineer here. Speed tape is basically thin aluminium with adhesive. It's used to prevent ingress of moisture and provide smooth aerodynamic flow. It's normally used after a repair has been carried out. It's not used for anything structural so if you ever see it on an aircraft then don't worry.

So true on the college bs. I was forced to take a Humanities class and I picked something regarding the arts. I did an assignment based on classroom blah, blah blah. I was dinged for plagiarism. I had been asked for my impression of an artwork and what it expressed to me and how it accomplished this. I went to the professor and said, why are you calling this plagiarism? It is my own thoughts and words. He said, this is almost verbatim of the textbook. I then replied, "I didn't read it!" He ended up giving me a "B." I stopped there, but often think I should have asked for an "A, " since I came up with the same thing the book said. I guess the "B" was a penalty for not reading the book!
