Friendly reminder that "consumption" does not always mean TB. Consumption just described any lung related illness that ate away at the body, this could also refer to a LOT of illnesses, especially lung cancer. Most historical consumption cases were probably TB, but in a society that used tobacco and used open fires to cook every meal and heat homes, we can safely assume that a lot of chronic lung conditions were just described as consumption

Side fact, consumption was noticed to be more prevalent among miners, particularly coal and asbestos miners. This caused doctors to believe that consumption was caused by the bad air in mines (which they were kind of right about) which is why the miasma theory was so prevalent.

Sudden, stomach-lurching realisation: everything comes back to tuberculosis because human history is TB's history. It was so prevalent that it became inseparable from us.
