Almost like a window to the past. It looks so dreamlike and tranquil.

I dont know why, but viewfinders like this really fascinates me...
I guess because to my brain its like a photo or video that moves without any frame rate limitations, its just lights moving through lenses and stuff...

The vibe these viewfinders give off are really out of this world

I love the vibe in all of your videos, I just wish they were much longer. It would be amazing if you made this a 8-15 minute video of just you using it on that lovely beach, grabbing a snack and enjoying the day

Some of these old cameras are amazing! I used one Italian made camera with excellent lens that gave me superb pictures, very sharp focussed and distortion free. Sadly these cameras are now museum pieces!

I'm a big fan of waist level shooting for street photography - and sometimes, for portraiture. It's about the way people react to you, when they see you there with a camera - if you have the camera held up to your eye, they often respond with a degree of nervous self-consciousness and suspicion. When you're looking down, rather than directly at them - not so much... Even though they very likely know you're looking at them through the viewfinder! I think it's an instinctive thing, to do with the sense of alarm at being "stared at" by a stranger, when their face is pointing directly towards you. So for street photography, I often tilt up the LCD on the back of my camera, so as to shoot waist-level, in this way.

This was my first SLR that I could call my own. Bought from a pawn shop in about 1976 with the standard 50mm lens, a 35mm and a 100mm. These cameras were quite popular at one time and the Topcon cameras that came later used the same bayonet mount and near identical flange to focal plane distance. This makes lenses relatively easy to find.

The simple "rolling barrel" shutter and mirror mechanism was reliable and tough, but top speeds were limited. The Exakta line that was the big brother used a fabric focal plane shutter. The Exa had an odd issue with light leaks. Almost every one I have seen in recent history has the tripod socket broken through. If the camera was mounted to a tripod and the 1/4x20 stud was bottomed out in the socket then tightened just a bit more, it would crack the thin metal at the bottom of the socket then unless you kept a screw in the tripod socket or taped over the hole, that opening was a light leak into the mirror box.

I could never find anyone on the internet using the exact same camera I got from my grandpa after he passed away... and you made something so beautiful with this camera in your video here, so thank you for that! And thank you for an amazing reminder of how beautiful this camera is! 💙🙏🏻

I have the newer Exa 1b, and i'm still fond of it since i've bought this camera in Berlin, back in 2003. It followed me twice in Thailand and never gave up.

This was my first serious camera. I loved it. Nice to see it again. Thank you for sharing.

I love Exa cameras, have a few of them. From all cameras in my collection I take out Exa 1a most often because of viewfinder altough the shutter speed is very limiting. And it was quite tricky to get used to mirrored image, like to get the composition right as it is counterintuitive in a way. But the experience is beautiful. Little magnifiing glass and Tessar makes perfectly sharp and unique images. And the shutter mechanism, astonishing. Love these!

I ❤️ this. The waist level viewfinder alone is beautiful. I’m going shopping for one right now!!

such a beauty. The camerabrand Exa was produced in my hometown Dresden (Germany). You can find those cameras and the a slightly more expensive Exakta cameras on flea markets for a small price.

I like the aged, almost sepia tones through the viewfinder, like a window into the past....👍

The life through that viewfinder is more beautiful.
