Today's ONE-MINUTE ENGLISH video was inspired by a conversation with two of my Ukrainian students who both fled the Donbas region in 2014, when the Russian invasion began.

This is a short video explaining to English language students how to use the common idioms / chunk / expression (NOT) THAT OLD CHESTNUT (AGAIN). We aim to show students how to learn English fast – and provide an easy way to learn English. This video is designed for Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced students learning English as a foreign language and is part of a series that looks at everyday English and common words, chunks, idioms, phrasal verbs, phrases and expressions used in spoken English - and British English in particular. It includes a story, an explanation of the common idiom and some examples which will help EFL and ESOL students understand and use the lexical item. It's suitable for students studying for the IELTS, Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) exams. It will also help anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of English idioms, English vocabulary and English grammar. CELTA- and DELTA-qualified English teachers may also find it helpful, especially teachers who use a lexical approach.

Teen: "Mom, I can't clean my room. I've got a mountain of homework."
Mom: "Oh, no! Not that old chestnut. Your schoolwork hasn't stopped you from video gaming."
Teen: "Caught me again, didn't you?"

Well, it seems to me that this phrase is used in the context of boring not nice talking as the examples regarding Boris and his avhievements. What about those stressful uncomfortable talks between couples, example; A) Everything was perfect until you had an affair (haha), B: Oh no, NOT THATOLD CHESTNUT AGAIN. That happened 10 years ago. Another example might be about fanaticism, A: I don't approve sexual diversity because that's a sin and god hates that., B) Jeez! NOT THAT OLD CHESTNUT AGAIN. Our society has changed over time, you know. Well, I don't know if i made myself understood about the contexts in which I might use that phrase.
