How California’s $20 Minimum Wage Devastated Fast Food Jobs

California’s $20 minimum wage mandate for fast food workers has spurred significant job losses in the state’s fast food sector, shedding over 6,000 positions in less than a year. Despite political claims of progress, rising labor costs have forced chains like Rubio’s and Shake Shack to shutter numerous locations, citing the unsustainable business environment created by government intervention. Analysts warn that these policies push restaurants to reduce employee hours, close underperforming locations, or explore automation. Critics argue that such mandates distort free-market dynamics, disproportionately harming small businesses while driving investment and jobs to states with more favorable conditions. California’s leadership faces growing skepticism over policies seen as prioritizing ideological goals over economic realities, leaving both businesses and employees grappling with the fallout.

Even Food Trucks in California have lost their minds, charging $20 - $30 per meal...not a sit down restaurant, A Food Truck meal

Shortly after this bill kicked in, I went to a McDonalds and went inside to order with the intent on paying cash. To my surprise, not only were there no cashiers anymore, but I also had to order through a kiosk that doesn't accept cash.

I left CA in 2002. I'm not spending $0.01 there, not even to visit family and friends.

The 11, 000 jobs must be all the government employees hired to process more unemployment and welfare applications.

The politicians don't understand that wages are scalable. When the lowest hourly salary goes to $20, everyone else's wages has to go up by roughly the same percentage or the senior staff will leave!

The "educated leftists " didn't see this coming?

Gee, I could've told them that and I don't have those extra letters after my name

Some 10-15 years ago, I happened to be in Seattle when they had just implemented a $15 minimum wage. A representative of McDonald's said point blank that many of these functions can be done by robots, so jobs would be cut. Sure enough, if you visit a McDonald's today, there are no longer five teenagers standing at the cash registers waiting to take your order. Instead, customers order on their phone with the app, or they can order at a kiosk inside. I don't know what's happening back in the kitchen, but I know robots can easily assemble hamburgers. Moreover, robots do not come to work high, steal food, or leave early to meet with their parole officer.

FAST FOOD WASN'T MEANT TO BE A HIGH PAYING JOB. DEMOCRATS WANT A FAST FOOD JOB TO SUPPORT A HOUSE, CAR, CHILDREN, BILLS ETC. A FAST FOOD JOB WAS MEANT TO BE TEMPORARY UNTIL YOU GOT EXPERIENCE FOR A CAREER JOB LATER ON.

You expect this with the franchises, but when the corporations start to shut stores because it is impacting the bottom line, you know it is bad.

These are entry level jobs for high school & college kids. It was not meant to support “single moms” with a boat load of kids.

I'm a Franchise retail store owner in Komiefornia. Video presented all true. We were forced to pay $20/hr for a beverage only store, completely devastating our business. Our sales dropped 30% and our labor cost rose 25%. Small businesses are being crushed. Ice cream stores are just as hurt as beverage only stores.
