I live in Santa Monica and this is a great song! The earthquake Robert references is the February 1971 San Fernando earthquake and the girl he is singing about is folk singer: Joni Mitchell. This album came out in November of 1971.

From 1971, which is when this was released, the "California Sound" which was epitomized by bands like Crosby Stills & Nash ( & Young when he'd drop by ) , The Eagles from their early days, Jackson Browne & Linda Ronstadt as well as Fleetwood Mac's first album with the Buckingham & Nicks combo being that bands new additions . "Going to California" fits very much in with the sounds of those artists from that era . Love watching you fall in love with Zeppelin . It does someone who grew up with this music see it pass along to appreciative ears 🙂

Aren't they fabulous? They did EVERY type of music!! The small guitar is a mandolin JPJ could play any string instrument and any key instrument as well!

"Like a dream." Very good description: it IS dreamlike, the gorgeously dripping notes, Robert's "soft voice" gently telling of unrequited love. Jimmy and Robert were in love with the epic folk singer from California, Joni Mitchell, because of her talent and her beauty. This song was for her. She greatly admired Zeppelin, but never dated any of them, lol. It's not surprising to us fans that LZ "surprised" you here, because they DO do so many different kinds of music, and always with excellence. Glad you liked their softer side as well!

John Paul Jones is so underrated and unappreciated but he does so much he just doesn’t get the credit he deserves. All four are just masters of their craft

The other instrument is the mandolin, normally used in Bluegrass and Celtic music played by John Paul Jones 🎼

It's often said that the line about the girl that can play guitar and sing is about Joni Mitchell.

Ive been hopelessly addicted to reactions of all kinds for about three years now, & reactions, to me, are 99% about the facial expressions, which show the emotion that the art, a song, or a film, or even a comedian, conjures up in people, becuase the face says it better than words ever could....anyway, this was a beuatiful reaction, just gorgeous...i was only born in 1976 too, so i still had a year to go before i was even on earth when this performance bappened, but i first heard zeppelin, & got into zeppelin as a 12 year old in 1988, & it was the album that this song was on....& just to see a young person react so soulfully, in these increasingly souless times 35 years later?...its a beautiful thing...thank you. Liked & subbed (if there was a "love reaction" to do on youtube, i would have done it, but, i could only "like" the upload, ha).

It's always hard to pick "favorites" songs for bands like The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.

But this is my favorite Zeppelin song - absolutely beautiful. I actually have a living will which includes a playlist for my service. This is one of the songs included.

Hey Steph👋I recently found out my favorite Zep song ‘Kashmir’ is actually the singers as well. Listen to studio version because of string section. ❤

Hey! I was live at Earls Court in May 1975. Wonder if it was this show ...
The original three shows sold out very quickly and they had to arrange two more, making a total of five sold out nights at Earls Court.

Just remember that in 1969 & 1970 we had both Led Zeppelin & The Beatles recording music at the same time!

John Paul Jones on the mandolin.

A man who never really gets the recognition that he should. A man who truly is a God among bassists.

I love your Zeppelin reactions and look forward to seeing more. You really just scratching the surface, they are so diversified and they do so many styles and they are all good! It would be nice to see some more from Madison Square Gardens, The Song Remains The Same and The Rain Song together perhaps?

this was apparently written some 50 years ago with you in mind
To find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings, la-la-la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
