I think it's so fascinating how ubiquitous the blanket safety is. We all know it doesn't actually protect us, and that the monsters aren't real to begin with... but we all still feel a profound sense of safety, comfort, and reassurance with a blanket, and severely vulnerable without it.

Evolutionary theory: Humans are social creatures that live in herds/tribes. In order to feel safe from predators, humans evolved to feel comfort from the presence of their kin sleeping next to them. Hence why monkeys huddle together when they sleep. Blankets mimic the skin to skin contact we once shared hundreds of thousands of years ago. This also explains why listening to the radio or podcast makes you so sleepy at night. Hearing human chatter is a good signal that you are safely within the bounds of your herd and therefore, it is safe to sleep.
