These days the world is all about energy efficiency and trying to reduce consumption. But that wasn’t always the case. Once upon a time all anyone cared about was bigger, louder and faster when it came to engines. And there’s still a few people out there who just want to build awesome and huge engines for their vehicles. From the 1930s monster to the beast that runs on diesel, here’s the 20 Biggest Engines In The World

I don't think it has ever been more apparent to me that the narrators of these things have absolutely no comprehension of what they are reading, from mistaking millimeters for meters, to reading the same word two different ways within five seconds time. It's astounding.

The big 4 cylinder engine you featured as the most powerful, biggest engine in the world, was anything but. I retired from Exxon Co. USA, as a mechanical technician in natural gas plants in Texas. The biggest most powerful engine ever made was by Ingersoll-Rand, and was designated the KVR-10, Turbocharged. They made 6 engines. Exxon had 3, and Pemex in Mexico had 3. When Exxon shut down production fields in 1999, they sold the entire plant including those 3 KVR-10’s to Pemex. The engines were 2 stories tall. The pistons were were the size of a 30 gallon drum, and with the connecting Rod were 9 1/2’ tall. One cylinder head weighed 2, 300lbs, there were 10 of them. The top half of the crankcase weighed 30, 000lbs, and the crankshaft was 22, 000lbs.

At 13.5 meters tall, 26.59 meters long and weighing in at over 2300tons, the Finnish-made Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is the largest internal-combustion engine ever produced and pumps out a whopping 80.1MW (107, 390hp). This colossal creation is responsible for powering one of the biggest container ships ever made. I worked on ship's for many years, my biggest engine has been a Burmeister and Wain 12 cyl reversible, slow speed (120rpm max), 3 injectors, / cylinder, 3 feet diameter pistons, Cross + piston 22 feet in length, 1 exhaust valve, 3 giant turbo's, 15 bars Exhaust gas boiler capable of driving a steam turbine connected to a 1, 8 MW Alternator. I loved the blood rush when we had to change a piston at sea, dangerous in bad weather, every part is so heavy, the hardest was for the engineer going in the crank case to unbolt the piston rod from the cross, so hot as just before breaking down the engine was running at 95 deg C cooling water crank case was also saturated with lub-oil mist. Every nut is tighten by hydraulic jacks now days but I remember my first engines nuts were tighten with 20 lbs sledge hammers, better stay out the way haha.

Yeah that 48 cylinder motorcycle - not really "beyond the wildest dreams" - More like "Well I guess it's weird and interesting that someone did that but it's completely f'ing useless."

14:25 GE90 115B 5.5 mm and 3.3mm across that is massive! I think you need to check your units.

At around 14:30 the narrator gets metres and millimetres a bit confused, resulting the the world's biggest jet engine being only 5.5mm long and 3.5mm across.

In 1967 I was stationed in the Army in Hawaii, and friend of mine was in the Navy stationed on the South Shores. My wife and I drove through Kolekole Pass to get to the Navel Station. It was there where my friend started talking about his MOS on repaired engines for the Navy’s power plant. He asked if I would mind going over to where he worked, for a tour! And of course I said yes. We got to this big building and He opened the door and we walked in. I was in there for about ten minutes and he asked me if I noticed anything different, and I said no, he said turn around and there was a wall, I thought about him being a mechanic on engines. (Me Being A Farm Boy), I didn’t think much about the wall and the connection this had to do with his MOS. He Laugh and said ‘I worked on this wall witch turned out to to be one of three Fairbanks- Morse engine that power the Navy Station. The size of that engine was nothing I would never forget! I was overwhelmed and the engine they were off loading on the page looks smaller then the ones in Hawaii, but what do I know being an old ‘Farm-Boy!

9:24, a two stroke fires on each revolution, so if it's running at 2000RPM, it's is firing 2000 times, not 4000, only twice as many as a 4 stroke. One of MANY errors in this video.

Script writer: hmmm I'll just copy and paste half of this Wikipedia page. That should do it!

At the Koreshan State Park in Florida, in the town of Edisto, they have a two cylinder Fairbanks-Morse that enthusiasts rebuilt. They run it every Saturday. It can run a GE generator that made alternating current back in the late 1920’s. I seem to remember the engine is a 1925 model. This park was once the compound a a utopian type self-sufficient society. It is all pretty well preserved including their belt-driven wood shop powered by a single cylinder motor. I have visited this park twice and hope to go back again. It’s fascinating to see that big diesel run too. They have a single cylinder engine that runs a compressor till it reaches a certain pressure. Then they insert a glow plug they made and when the compressor valve is opened it turns the flywheel and off she goes!

Give my brain a lobotomy attempting to convert the math systems used. Often within the same sentence.

Wow, that 5.5mm x 3.5mm engine weighs just under 8300kgs... that's insane!!!

RIP Chris for the many years of entertaining and amazing people in your truck. At least he died doing what he loved entertaining and amazing. God speed Sir.

In Lyle Cummins book, "Diesel's Engine" he described an early single cylinder diesel engine produced for powering a manufacturing plant, with a bore over 4 feet, a stroke slightly longer which produced (if memory serves me, and it still does from time to time) a whopping 1750 hp at a screaming 275 rpm. Fascinating book should be a must read for any well rounded gear head.

14:34 engine cannot be 5.35mm long - perhaps 5.35m? 5.35mm = .210" (approx).
