What is the difference in system production between Toyota and Tesla? What is changing in the automotive industry? What impact are electric vehicles having on the industry? Why has a long-standing company like Toyota been put in the rear-view mirror by Tesla?

In this episode Joe Van Orden, of Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business Supply Chain Management Department, compares the production and supply sourcing methods of automakers Toyota and Tesla. Not since the famous battle of Ford vs. Ferrari have two automakers pushed the limits to develop the ultimate automobile for the times!

It really is amazing to think how all of the legacy OEMs just sat and watched as Tesla rapidly iterated itself into what it is today. It's already too late for some of them - Toyota itself could be a casualty of resting on their laurels. Thanks for the presentation!

Great presentation! In business school we read about how kodak went out of business. Following Tesla and the car industry now is like getting a real time lesson in business. Fascinating stuff.

33:25 That's not exactly what they said. They said the way the early Model 3 was put together (body in white) was a mess from a production and cost standpoint. But everything underneath (software, motors, batteries, etc) was astoundingly good.

Another FSD/Tesla advantage: Training networks requires LOTS of data and lots of labeled data. Tesla can selectively collect data from every Tesla car on the road; even those not driving FSD-beta. Other efforts at computer-driven cars lack the ability to collect data at scale: varied data, quality data, from large fleets driving everywhere. In addition, to train neural networks at scale one needs large quantities of labeled data. Tesla already is automating their labeling process, which gives them another huge advantage.

19:20 only the Model 3 rear wheel drive Standard Range uses LFP. The Long Range and performance version of the 3 and Y use nickel based chemistry. There is no SR version of the Y, for now.

Good vid. I think you missed the point about IRA and BIL - it's about maximising the establishment of the industry in North America. Not just speed.

Well, two main differences. Agile for Hardware vs TPS. Agile runs circles around it. Second is Digital Self Management versus a top down structure. Tesla is doing to Toyota what Toyota did to the American big three in the 1970’s/80’s but with greater speed and innovation.

Little known fact that the late 1800s and early 1900s saw bigger popularity of battery electric cars than combustion engines, until ICE vehicles replaced the hand crank with an electric starter and Ford started cheap mass production. How anyone could prefer a stinking noise machine over a quiet clean car anyway is a mystery to me.
