I am the exception to that rule. Got wounded while serving overseas. At one point it was up in the air if I would ever walk or talk again. At the time my wife was about 24 and smoking hot. I prepared myself for "the talk" where she would bail. I couldn't blame her. She could restart very easily at that age with a husband who hadn't been crippled.

Only that "talk" never came. I learned how to speak again. She was there. I learned how to walk again (with a cane). She was there. We had 1 extremely hard year with only a few hundred dollars a month coming in. She was there. At one point we were sitting in my truck in the driveway watching Netflix on my phone cause the power was shut off. She was there. She even joked about it saying one day we will look back at this moment and laugh.

We have been married for 15 years now and the "talk" never happened. We do laugh about driveway Netflix. We have 4 kids and our own home. Even have a dog that chews up everything. We don't have everything, but we have enough. She's been there the whole time, and I no longer worry about the "talk".
