The Secret History is great! I’m also surprised that Penguin don’t also do an edition of his History of the Wars. If they think Gregory of Tours’ History of the Franks is important enough to have as a Penguin Classic, then surely they should do more Procopius.

Yes!!! The Secret History is enthralling and one of my favorite classical texts. The Byzantine Big Four come across as such fascinating individuals.

Have you read The Glory of the Empire by Jean d’Ormesson? Its fictional recreation of a fake empire that has close ties to some Byzantine history makes it fun to see how he recasts some of Procopius’ anecdotes.
