Paul Newman once asked Hitchcock on the set of Torn curtain, about the motivation of his character, The master of suspense, who was a great fan of actor's studio methods, answered with his legendary english phlegm : " His salary" Newman understood and never asked again..

"Know your lines and mean them when you say them."

Reminds me of a story Vincent D’Onofrio said about preparing for his role in Full Metal Jacket. He would meet up with Stanley Kubrick every week and all Kubrick would say was D’Onofrio needed to keep gaining weight. After several weeks of this, D’Onofrio finally asked if they could start discussing how to play the character and Kubrick replied “that’s your job”.

I'd be star struck if i ever met Tom Hanks in real life. One of the greatest actors of our time and a genuinely wholesome person. He was perfect to play Mr Rogers.

That's why producers, directors will toss off a difficult actor that shows up hung over, late, keeps everyone waiting the minute their popularity takes a dive. That's why some actors continue to work for decades. They are great to work with.

I've heard voice actors say pretty much the same thing. It makes sense because this is art. It reminds me of session musicians. Those are instrumentalists who are commissioned to go into a studio and perform something someone else has written. If you can play the instrument well and follow what's been written, then good. But often you're asked to do multiple takes, each with "something different" in them. And the person asking you to do this does not know what the "something different" is. They're asking you. If you can give several options, then you're not just someone who got paid because you did the job. You're someone who they're going to call for the next project.

Despite their alleged fued, Bette Davis always said of Joan Crawford, ' she was on time, she knew her lines'. She recognised the professionalism, which was important to her.

You can really apply that to any job: Show up on time. Know what your job is. Have some ideas to make things go smoother.

Believe it was Brian Cox who said that acting really is as simple as "LEARN YOUR FUCKING LINES AND DONT BUMP INTO THE FUCKING FURNITURE". Possibly an over simplification, but as someone who works as a tech on a performing arts college course its amazing how many young actors haven't figured that out yet.

Larry "Bud" Melman (of the david Letterman show) once said a successful actor must do three things:
1. Show up on time.
2. Learn your lines.
3. Don't fall off the stage.

That’s just a great lesson to all people who want to succeed in anything.

The director seeing the end of this clip:

*No. No! I said have a head FULL of ideas, not have just one. Did I not get through to you??!*

I mean, it's good advice universally. I can apply it to my life and I'm just a student.

This is what i taught my son " if you want to stand out, just show up on time and don't argue with your boss " He replied " : but isn't it the less I am supposed to ? " I added : "Yes, but still, you'll see that half of you co-workers will fail to do that".

Sometimes those jerks make us better. Good of Mr. Hanks to recognize that.
