As a psychotherapist, I love this for so many reasons. Not only are you teaching responsible dog ownership, you’re teaching people how to express boundaries and to say, ‘No’, which can sometimes be especially hard for women. These lessons will resonate into their everyday lives.

As a service dog handler I really have to learn how to advocate for my dogs personal space. Sometimes a stern "no" isn't enough, body blocking isn't enough, I'll actually have to smack someone's hands away because people refuse to listen.

Oh, the infamous "Dogs love me" line! 😂 I have a Service Dog and I hear that one ALL the time! Learning to say "No" to people is important, thanks for covering this topic!

Love that peeps are practicing setting reasonable boundaries! It’s a good reminder that you can be kind while asking for what you want. Great vid!!

Sometimes people are clueless, I was in the vet waiting room with my dog who had a chest wound, sitting at my feet with a muzzle on. This lady comes in with her long extendable leashed dog and her dog comes straight over to say hi to my dog & the lady wasn't paying attention at all, was talking to the front desk people and I was like "no, no, no, my dog isn't strange dog friendly and she's injured". Who doesn't realize that most dogs are anxious in the vet waiting room and I hate extendable leashes!

This is definitely something I've had to work on - being more assertive and setting the boundaries that my dog can't. If I genuinely think it's a good idea and appropriate, I will let some people who have the right approach (calm, listening to me, respectful) greet my dog. She's shy around strangers, so I'll tell people they can give her one of the treats I carry but not to pet her. I want to socialize her and have her view strangers as potentially positive experiences, but I think a lot of us struggle to pick and choose who can greet our dog(s) and when. It is something I am actively working on.

Thank you for addressing an uncomfortable issue. It is difficult sometimes to refuse an offer to pet or interact without coming across as an Ahole-but the safety and well being of pets and humans involved are the most important thing. Thank you for some alternatives for saying NO with conviction.

Another great video Tom. I was working with a client one time, her lab is not friendly with dogs. She told a guy get your dog ( which was off lead) he said he's ok. She told him hers will probably bite, he said why do you have that dog out in public? She said mine is on a leash and I have control, yours is not and you don't have control.
Not all dogs are fun and happy but they deserve to be outside if being controlled properly.
Keep teaching the world Tom.... 🐾🐕❤️

My oldest dog is fine with people. I never had to say "no". Now with my new rescue in the mix we have to say no all the time and it is quite hard. People can be real dicks about it too. great video!

You know it’s so frustrating when you give people respect and they don’t give you respect when out walking your dog people with dogs see your dog is reactive but still wanna walk towards you and ask to greet it’s like come on please don’t do this
Great video thanks for sharing and posting and dog muzzled still people don’t wanna respect it always leashed

This advice was so helpful - I actually ended up using it on a walk a few days ago! My neighborhood is very quiet and not many people ask to pet my dog, which is nice - he’s reactive mainly towards other dogs, but I don’t want to risk anything. However, yesterday I was on a walk and I heard scuffling behind me. I turned around and a maybe ten-year-old person was being dragged by his lab puppy towards us. My dog panicked and started growling and trying to lunge, but I immediately stepped in front of him while pulling him behind me with the leash and said loudly “Sorry, he’s not friendly!” The kiddo ended up turning around, and I felt surprisingly calm and happy that I managed to diffuse that situation. Being in front of my dog made me feel so much more confident, and I’m sure he picked up on that as well. Thanks so much for doing what you do!

From watching your videos Tom I've come to realize that I have to be my dog's advocate and speak up for him if I know that he wouldn't want to interact with a person or a certain dog. Our dogs can't speak up for themselves so we have to do it for them.

Wow😳! I've never heard of a trainer addressing this important issue. Creating good, SAFE boundaries🚦 is an important lesson for both dogs and women!

I've a sweet big female boxer. She's ok with other dogs and people. But it's been so many times that someone come with a dog in front of then and expect that i aloud a dog that is not in control meeting my dog! And guess what? A lot of these dogs come and bark or lunge against my dog! So great video!

The “my dog kills dogs” 😂🤣🤣

On a serious note, I cannot stop watching your videos! I love them. I don’t have a dog currently(our dog passed) but it’s making me want a dog, or even to train a friends dog!

Thank you for this My 16 year old was walking our nervous dog and some foster dogs on leash and a gs came into the street, hackles up, and our 3 dogs were going to tear it apart, so my daughter yelled 'go home ' and put her foot out to get the gs away, all while the owners slowly got out of their pool and yelled that the dog was friendly. She told them to keep their dog leashed if it can't stay away. And the owners got mad at my daughter for 'kicking' their dog, saying she was too young to tell them to leash their dog. She came home in tears. Yes, I went down there and had some words with them. So many clueless owners.

Thanks for this video! Very helpful. My aussie is reactive and I feel like such a jerk saying no whe people ask to pet him. He's beautiful and fluffy and has gorgeous eyes but does not like strangers petting him. I wish it was easy to say no and not feel bad, but I know I have to advocate for my pup.

WOW!!!! Because of you I can step up and say NO! she is not dog friendly and is OKAY. There are people out there who think is okay to let their dog run loose, that is so irresponsible. They are thinking every dog is the same as theirs and they are NOT. the consequences are HUGE. Thank you for this.
