Here in Britain root and route are pronounce root, I don't really mind I understand there will be different ways of pronouncing lots of word that have similar sounds, some words even the posh ( high class snobs ) pronounce words differently from us the working class. I'm rooting and routeing for you guys.

"Root" is also a different word. That doesn't make the British pronunciation of "route" incorrect though.

Being born and raised in San Francisco and lived in San Francisco my entire life, I learned "route" as ROWT (yes, same pronunciation as rout, not root) and that's the pronunciation I defend in my native hometown. I'd say if you can easily differentiate the spoken words of "meat" and "meet" by context and care that "root" is also a word of its own, you can respect regional usages of "route" pronounced as ROWT and the other word "rout" as well with context. You might ask what if there's no context? Well, then that's the same as someone asking you how to spell the word "mēt", or how to spell "thâr". Or you might counter-examine me with "root" is still the right way to say route. And I'll be like "root" as in root like is that root from your tree or from my tree?

And to be fair, whenever I visit New York City, I knew better to call Houston Street as "house-den" street and not "hyoos-den street" unless I'm in Texas. So my conclusion is just respect the locals of the place you're visiting or relocating to even if their way of pronouncing words doesn't make sense to you and don't change or convert their way of speaking.

In Australia we also pronounce it as 'Root' but it feels awkward saying it that way b'cos "Root" in Australia also means Sex in a dirty way. So for the last few years I've been pronouncing it as "Rowt" LOL.

It’s simple. If you’re old, it’s rowt. If you’re young, it’s root.

I drive on Root 66 and eat at a restaurant named Root 66. The way I get there is the Rowt I've chosen. To put it another way. When it's the name of a highway, our local dialect would be ROOT, the path would be a Route with a silent E. By the way, this will change depending on the regional dialect. Many American's pronounce words based on where their ancestors came from. Crick Vs Creek is one of those words, with German families saying Crick instead of creek. I also say Rut Beer instead of Root Beer, again this is a German or Northern European dialect's influence, although it's not pronounced that way by very many younger people, who's language tends to be more "Standard American" for lack of a better way of putting it.

Older people in particular have their own way of pronouncing various words simply because they often spoke a European language and English in the home and the accents of words would get changed based on this.

Believe it or not it can be hard for some Americans to understand other Americans, again this is especially true the older they are.

Ever since childhood, I had been hearing it pronounced 'root', not 'rowt', as in the traditional song heard more than 50 years ago, sung by well-known artists such as Nat "King" Cole and Manhattan Transfer. Then I started hearing it pronounced 'rowt' at some sports events in the distant past. Today, I hear many, Americans(mostly) wrongly(?), or accepted by choice, as 'rowt', when they mean 'root'.

i was playing a puzzle game just now and one of the little puzzles they were more proud of got a name, it involves figuring out an efficient path to touch 9 points in a 3d maze. the title of said puzzle is "scout, route, surmount" which irritated me since that little rhyme only works with the wrong version of that word lol.

So dictates the fellow with the French accent to native English speakers. Moreover, if we were to rely on etymology to determine proper contemporary pronunciation, then we should pronounce both “rout” and “route” as “root”, since both words derive from the French “route”

I'm from the United States. I say both "root" and "rout", depending on what I'm talking about. If I use it for public transportation like taxis and buses, I'd say "root". But when I'm talking about private transportation like a car or trailer, I'd say "rout".

In New Zealand, where I'm from, a crude(er) alternative to 'to fuck' is 'to root'. Many people there have changed their pronunciation to 'rowt' when using it in its original sense to avoid embarrassment.
