So basically if they ejected they’ll just be punished by physics and biology

Ejection seats: better than crashing, but only slightly.

In the U.S Navy, they call the Ejection Lever the "Admiral's Doorbell" because you'll have to go and talk to the admiral afterwards to explain to him why you pulled it.

I knew two pilots in my 23 years in the Air Force that had ejected at some point, and both had been significantly injured. One never flew again. One put it like this: "When you eject from a fast moving aircraft, you are not choosing between danger and safety. Youre choosing what is most likely the lesser of two evils." Its not a sure thing.

*Ejects from plane and suffers serious injuries*

Years later: “We have found your injuries are not service related.”

These pilots are actually amazing under pressure. They have to make sure 100% there was nothing they could’ve done prior to ejecting. These guys know how much these jets are worth and pilots have a sentimental attachment to their jets, they just dont eject for any reason, the jet has to be 100% failing before they’ll do it.

Missile coming straight at you.
Stay in plane: Dead
Eject: Lose job, break neck, break spine, dislocate several joints, and lose a leg.

Yep... I broke my neck, back and skull. Luckily no paralyzing... just tons of micro cracks with a lot of osteoarthritis. But I loved to fly and would fly again tomorrow! A6E Intruders 👍

Imagine ejecting and then getting hit direct impact by the missile you were ejecting from

Definitely made to encourage the pilot to land the burning plane. 🔥

When I was at Tyndall we had a pilot eject over the gulf in a F-15C going near Mach speed after blacking out. His arms and legs wrapped around the seat from the force shattering all of his limbs. He still flew after that too.

I never thought about it but I guess it makes sense that an escape system from something that can travel faster than the speed of sound would definitely have a high risk of injury.
