Structure of Hair

Показать описание
Hello!
In this video, I explain
Structure of hair
(hair structure)
Hair is a simple structure that is made up of protein filaments called Keratin.
Hair acts as a barrier to foreign particles.
It's an important part of the appearance and creates gender identity.
Human hair is divided into two parts
1. Hair root -located below the epidermis
2. Hair shaft- located above the epidermis
Structures of the Hair Root
Hair follicle (1:23) - tube-like depression or pocket in the skin or scalp that contains the hair root
Hair bulb- the lowest part of a strand of hair; thickened, club-shaped
Dermal papilla (2:27) - small, cone-shaped elevation located at the base of the hair follicle that fits into the hair bulb
Arrector pili muscle (3:54) - small, involuntary muscle in the base of the hair follicle; when it contracts, we get goosebumps
Sebaceous glands (4:28) - oil glands in the skin that are connected to the hair follicles; secretes sebum (fatty, oily substance)
Structures of the Hair Shaft
Hair Layers
Cuticle (4:48)- the outermost layer of hair; consists of a single, overlapping layer of transparent, scale-like cells; protects the inner structure of hair; creates shine and smoothness
Cortex (5:30)- middle layer of the hair; 90% of total hair weight comes from the Cortex; elasticity and color are the results of protein in the cortex
Medulla (5:52)- the innermost layer of hair; generally only thick, coarse hair contains a medulla; has no known purpose.
