Always loved this episode for the fact that it talks about depression in a very clever way. After all depression is the monster that no one else can see but you...and maybe a doctor

The writer of this episode, Richard Curtis wrote, "So – here’s the thing – the key reason I wrote this episode – was out of love for my sister Bindy. She was a gorgeous and brilliant person, 2 years older than me. She loved Vincent Van Gogh and life. She couldn’t have been more full of generosity and joy.
But half way through her life she was hit by depression and intermittently it hurt her for the rest of her life. And a few years before this show, like Vincent, she took her own life.
That was me trying to show Bin how glorious she had been in our lives – and how nothing could change that, taking her own life wasn’t a failure by her, or a rejection of all of us. It was, as they say on Love island, what it was."

Watching 4 grown men cry is what I've been waiting for this episode for

I love when Doctor Who tackles big issues like this. It's a hard-hitting issue wrapped up in a family show. I think it's so important that they still explain that Vincent committed suicide. Because depression isn't fixed like that... but that doesn't mean what Amy and the Doctor did was worthless.

Apparently I still haven't reached the point where I can watch Vincent in the gallery without crying. Such a good episode. I love how they physically recreate the scenes from Van Gogh's paintings so much!

Supposedly Bill Nighy wasn't even paid for this part, he loves Van Gogh so much he agreed to do it for free then improvised that entire speech about Van Gogh because that's how he genuinely feels about him and his work.

That ending is totally what I'd do with a time machine, I'd bring creators to the present and show them just how much their work is loved. I'd bring them to comic con, to fan gatherings.

“The good things don’t always soften the bad things but the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant” Fav quote.
I also loved the Starry night scene the For Amy on Sunflower painting and Amy didn’t know she was crying.

Bill Nighy is such a huge Van Gogh fan that he agreed to appear here for free, and his speech at the end is entirely improvised.

This right here is why I love watching blindwave. They never shy away from the emotion that a show can evoke in the watchers, it is what makes them the best.☺

when i watched this episode i had no idea about vincent van gogh...we dont know him here in asia...but the themes of depression and his suicide really hit me hard....in India after high school the competition to get into good colleges is real and the depression and struggle of failing drove me to suicide thoughts...i was watching this episode then...and the last line really really hit me that good things in life dont counteract the bad things...it just gave me so much hope and strength that that terrible time will pass and i will be happy....i love this episode for that reason alone

A story about mental health that an eight year old can understand, quite frankly magnificent drama. As a fan since 1979 I think this might be Doctor Who's finest hour ever.

I love the analogy of using an invisible monster that only Vincent can see to his own personal battle with depression.

Aaron looked like a happy, content mother at Christmas knowing what the other guys are about to experience & feel.

It's a classic "nice guy" problem - Getting murdered by a fascist lizard warrior and then sucked into a crack in reality itself.

I've watched it happened to a few of my friends. At least I think I did, I can't really remember them now.

This episode is one that comes to mind whenever I think about the 11th Doctor's era, and certainly a reaction I've been looking forward to for a while. It's one of those heavy and very emotional episodes that you will remember whenever you look back at Doctor Who as a show.

The song used for the scenes of Van Gogh in the museum is "Chances" by Athlete.

Also not sure if the guys (Eric especially) noticed it, but the accordion player in the bar was playing a version of Murray Gold's "I Am The Doctor" theme/motif from the series 5 soundtrack.

Seeing you guys tear up over Vincent's gallery visit made me tear up a bit. I admire this episode for tackling depression through Vincent Van Gogh. It isn't a easy thing to do on a family show. But Doctor Who succeeded, producing one of the most emotional and beautiful episodes it has ever conceived.

This is the one i've been waiting for.

My personal favourite episode of Doctor Who and quite possibly my favourite episode of television ever.

The scene with Vincent in the gallery is definitely the best.
