Inside a Shanghai Covid-19 makeshift hospital where ‘lights are on all night’

Shanghai reported its first fatalities from the current Covid-19 wave on April 18, 2022. All three patients who died were over the age of 85 and unvaccinated. The first batch of deaths reported from the latest wave came as the city’s residents continue to cope with stringent measures imposed by the city. Among them is Yu Beibei, who tested positive for Covid-19 on April 2. Although her symptoms cleared up after a few days, she was separated from her family and sent to a makeshift hospital, one of over a 100 created in Shanghai to combat the biggest wave of Covid-19 to hit the city. Yu says most people have complained about the dirty bathrooms, the lack of hot showers, and the constant indoor lighting, making it difficult to sleep at night.

I'm here in Shanghai and can tell you without a doubt that everyone has been in quarantine for at least a month, not two weeks. A colleague has even hit his 40-day in-home quarantine mark with no clean water supplied. He has to distill the non-potable tap water. Conditions are different depending on the housing community you live in. Local communities are given free rein to interpret policy as they please--a dangerous thing when most of the population is undereducated about covid.

My friend has been coughing for 5 days, yesterday she even spilt blood but she refuses to go to see a doctor by fear of not receiving any treatment AND be interned.

Shanghai has always been regarded the face of China. And Chinese people cherish their faces more than anything. Don’t tell me I’m wrong. It’s in our blood that we would rather starve ourselves after serving the last food on the table, just to look decent in front of our guests.That’s why the whole process of the Shanghai lock down looks so scary and confusing. I really don’t know what’s happening.It seems to me that something has gotten out of control.

The ppl have been made to be terrified of covid and it took them all being stuck together with hardly any symptoms to realise that the omicron virus isn’t as bad as other variants. They aren’t so worried about the disease now but what does it matter when you have to go to a covid camp regardless of your symptoms status?

What happened to staying at home and quarantining? Why waste so much money and resources on something that is not deadly. Anyone under 70 years old have a 99.95% chance of survival. Regardless of virus or not the elderly have always been vulnerable. What a total charade this whole thing is. People got to wake up from this nonsense. Use your common sense for once instead of relying on media.

It’s true the conditions of those quarantine centres are not ideal but definitely doesn’t look as bad as the western media cherry-picked to report them.

People like her thinks that those washroom should be cleaned by cleaners. They should in fact take care of it themselves as they're the ones using them. As for the lightings being always on, just wear a eye mask. Don't always think of oneself. Be considerate to the front liners. They're more stressful than you are.
