In his traditional televised address on 24 December, #King #Philippe shared with all Belgians, his emotion, following a letter received by the Palace: ‘A few weeks ago, pupils in the first year of secondary school at the #Sancta #Maria school in #Louvain sent me a letter, accompanied by a poignant video. Confronted every day with images of children who are victims of war violence, they express their incomprehension in the face of these tragedies. Their message contains profound questions. Some are addressed directly to me, as King, and as a father’, explained the Sovereign.
A direct reference to the various conflicts affecting our planet. Both the war in #Ukraine - on Europe's doorstep - and the conflicts in the Middle East are having an impact on the younger generation. Whether they are victims or observers of these major conflicts, this generation says it is touched by their distress, but also by their inability to act, notes the King: ‘The approach of these pupils is both moving and hopeful. They put themselves in the place of other children, who live far away from them, in a world where dreams are shattered before they even have a chance to blossom. Their questions touch me deeply. I understand their confusion and their sense of powerlessness.
‘These young people are asking us to give them reasons for hope. These reasons for hope exist. Always’, he reassures us, calling on all to work together towards a better world. ‘To hope is not to wait passively for a better future. It means committing to building and moving forward together towards a fairer, more respectful world, where every child is welcomed as the most precious of promises. A world without war and suffering is, of course, an illusion. But that must not stop us from continuing to work towards it,' he said.
The Sovereign therefore called on the world's authorities to act in this direction: ‘For heads of state and political authorities, this implies a constant commitment to safeguarding a world order based on international law, in favour of peace and the protection of all, starting with the most vulnerable, children. Each and every one of us is called upon to contribute to a fairer world, where there is no domination by the strongest, but respect for the rights and dignity of all’.
The King also took this opportunity to thank and congratulate ‘the many players in civil society (who) are setting an example for us. By working tirelessly for dialogue between communities, social cohesion, health, education and justice. The King said that "as the year draws to a close, the #Queen and I would like to thank them and encourage them to continue along this path."
He also called on #Belgian politicians, who are still discussing the formation of the federal and Brussels governments, to work so that our country can face the future with confidence: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, the coming year should finally see all our governments at work. We are counting on them to ensure that our country, its institutions, businesses and citizens can look to the future with confidence.’
He concluded his speech with his best wishes for the festive season and the New Year ahead.

Let's help young people look to the future with confidence. The challenges of our time - geopolitical upheaval, climate change, a fragile economy, the technological revolution - may seem overwhelming, but it's up to us to write our future together, building on what unites us and makes our country strong. Many players in civil society are setting an example for us, working tirelessly for dialogue between communities, social cohesion, health, education and justice. May this #Christmas and New Year period be for each of us a source of inspiration, renewal and hope with the Queen and all our family. I wish you a #Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
