California is Considering Charging Drivers By The Mile

What Is the Caltrans Pilot Program?

California is testing a new per-mile charge system, ranging from 2 to 5 cents per mile, to ensure all vehicle types contribute fairly to road maintenance. This pilot program aims to address the declining fuel tax revenue as more efficient and electric vehicles become common.

How Will It Work?

California may use GPS technology or annual odometer checks to track miles driven. While this approach aims for fairness, it raises privacy and logistical concerns. The state is considering exemptions and credits for low-income and rural drivers to address some of these issues.

Potential Impacts on Drivers

A mileage tax could disproportionately affect lower-income and middle-class families, especially those with older vehicles or long commutes. However, costs can be lowered by carpooling, using public transport, or switching to electric vehicles.

What’s Next?

If California implements this mileage-based fee, it could significantly change how we think about driving and transportation costs. Stay informed about this potential change and consider how it may impact your daily life and commute.

How would a per-mile charge impact your daily life or commute to work? Comment below!

So electric vehicles caused the problem and they are trying to find a way to screw gas drivers as much as possible? I don't think so. They can charge electric vehicles the maximum price per mile and give gas drivers a break for once. They've been driving for years now avoiding their part in paying for road EV people make up the difference that they caused. They are setting it up in a way that would screw anyone who owns a truck or SUV the most. California is such a cesspool I hope this entire state collapses in on itself. Even if I still live here I will take the L so that no other state turns out like this.
