Results of Thyroid Biopsy | UCLA Endocrine Center

For most thyroid biopsies, the results are benign (noncancerous), says endocrinologist Yaroslav Gofnung, MD. Sometimes the results come back as indeterminant, which means it’s unknown if the cells are benign or cancerous. When this happens, the experts at UCLA Health can analyze the genetics of the biopsy. This method is highly accurate and will determine if the cells are suspicious or benign.

A third possible result is nondiagnostic, which means the pathologist didn’t have enough cells to make a conclusion. This often requires a second biopsy. To avoid this result, a cytotechnologist assists in the biopsy to ensure the pathologist has enough cells for a clear diagnosis. This is one way UCLA Health provides the highest standard of care for patients.

Mine came in as Bethesda 1, which is non-diagnostic so presumably not enough material was obtained during the biopsy and I will need to repeat this procedure (2.1 cm hypodense thyroid nodule picked up on PSMA-Pet scan.
