In 2011, an ancient temple in Kerala, the Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, made headlines when vast treasures were discovered in secret vaults under the temple. Gold, silver, gems and jewels on a scale that boggles the mind were stored in them. How did the treasure get there? Just how much wealth is there? And who does it all belong to now? I lived my whole life in Trivandrum, it may not be as developed as Kochi but this royal city and its treasures are hidden in plain sight.This temple is in the heart of the city but if you have an eye for architecture you will see it’s ancient forts and walls which find its way through modern buildings, oddly placed random palaces and ancient houses, community of multiple generations Tamil Brahmin priests and the whispers of it’s treasures and myths.Unlike Mysore kings, Travancore kings were humble, they never lead a lavish lifestyle or spent money on majestic palaces .India had many rich kingdoms but got looted by invaders but Travancore got lucky with their treasures.
