A well-maintained and properly-serviced W220 S-Class can be a great buy. This is especially true for the facelifted models, which were improved in all areas. During my time as an employee of a Mercedes’ dealership I enjoyed driving those cars.
The problem is that many people don’t maintain properly. This is a big problem today with many cars from all brands. People will either cheapen out on maintenance and bring them to mechanics that are unqualified to work on these cars in order to save money mainly. Some cars can cope better with this type of treatment than others. But eventually things can go wrong if the car is not getting the correct servicing and more importantly the correct and improved spare parts.
Unqualified mechanics - the biggest threat to modern cars. Did you know that just unclipping the battery on a W220 can screw up the electrical systems? There is a process that is required to unclip and remove the battery so that the electronic components are not damaged and go crazy. A crap mechanic is not going to tell you that they messed up - they will blame the car. I wonder how many W220s had electrical issues because some cheap mechanic didn’t follow the correct procedure on how to remove the battery before working on the car. In fact there is a video on how to do it properly on Youtube (look up Mercedes Source W220 battery removal).
Regarding the air-suspensions, they are not unreliable; they simply require more maintenance because they have a lot of wear and tear parts. But in my honest opinion you don’t need the air-suspension. The regular W220 suspension is already excellent.
When you are buying a high-end car like this you will also need to put money aside for maintenance. In fact this should apply to any car - even the so-called “reliable” brands.

This show is from at least 5 years back. Today, an A6 allroad would cost about £1500 and a 2001 S-Class probably about £1000. The S2000 has gone up in value.

Had two 2.5tdi Audis. Both were very reliable. The only downside timing belt changing will cost more.. Rather than that I had more problems with 1.9tdi engine then with both 2.5tdi I had. actually the new 1.9tdi and 2ltr tdi engines are more expensive to fix then this V6 2.5tdi. Because 2.5tdi features less complex fuel system particular the nozzles they are less demanding towards the purity of a fuel. The clutch and gear box system is made like a tank, you can really push the engine to the limits every time and not to worry about damaging the gear box or clutch they are made to withstand it.. It is far more easier to break it on 1.9tdi.. This particular A6 model has everything anyone would need from the car. The standart sound system is probably the best among many car models. The standart option features 8 speakers, the medium option (in most of the cars) 8 speakers + subwoofer and there is the last version of bosse sound system with 12 powerful speakers + subwoofer. The interior is well made lots of spaces to put things, the trunk is pretty big and if it a vagon you can put lot of stuff inside of it. The car also had many optional features such as webasto, heated side mirrors, electric windows controlled with a car key was standart, 2.5tdi was made for highway driving it is economical with higher speeds this engine is high reving unlike 1.9tdi that loses power after it hits 3k rpms, this engine delivers power through the whole rpm range. Quattro version is less economical in the urban driving it eats around ~12liters/100km, on the highway you can reach 6-7liters/100km even driving faster then 120km/h
The myths about these engines are made from those who bought early examples with 110kw power engines. Those were pretty bad engines, also most of the problems came from the fact that people usually did not serviced those engines properly. The later engines with 120kw and 132kw power were more reliable. These were one of the best cars I have had so far. In fact the new models doesnt have the same feel anymore, they are "plasticy" inside, feels less comfortable and less solid.

Bought that S-Class Mercedes for my mom almost 2 years ago for 3000€.
AVOID that car !
Electric connections are ultra cheap and WILL fail you.
Airmatic suspension is very fragile, already changed a few components like the compressor, three bags and the splitting system (don't know the english name).
It's a rust bucket ; lower side on all four doors is showing paint bubbles and even some visible rust, same goes for the boot.
The key stoped working, which would have cost a ton of money (more than half the car's price) if not for an ex-mercedes engineer who did it for 250€ by reprogramming the computer to code in the new key.

Now the Airmatic system is failing again, she seats tilted to one side.
The Turbo control module thingy (I don't take care of it myself anymore) is now failing aswell, making it switch to very low power mode whenever the engine gets to proper running temperature ....

I'm just sick of it.
BUT, it's awesome on the road ! Took it for a spin a year ago on German autobahn :D
Also, these sweet double layer windows :o

3 Months ago, she bought a CLS320 and now the issues are incomming too (especially the Turbo thingy, which is 3000€ in a Mercedes garage btw).
