That's just it, these people really DO think they can lie reality away. They engage in what's known as "magical thinking" wherein they believe whatever fanciful thoughts they have can in fact become real if they just push them down on other people hard enough. (In this specific case at least, magical thinking can manifest in a couple different ways)
