Diffraction is a function of both aperture and lens focal length. if you are using a 50mm lens, then you will hit loss of sharpness from diffraction at f11, so f 16 is not a good idea. If you are shooting a 150mm lens, either telephoto on 35mm film for a normal focal length on 4x5 large format film, you can go down to f 16 or 22 with no diffraction. Why the difference? It's all a matter of the diameter of the lens aperture. On a 150mm lens, the physical diameter of the aperture is three times as wide as on a 50mm lens at any f-stop, so you will not hit diffraction until you use much smaller apertures. On a 50mm lens with a maximum aperture of 2.0, more or less, the optimum aperture for sharpness is almost always going to be around f8.0. Of course, there are other factors which might take precedence when choosing a landscape aperture. For example, if it is windy and there is a lot of foliage moving around, f8.0 may be your sharpest f-stop, but the need to stop subject motion might make f4.0 a better compromise. And that is the whole story!

●Best Sharpness f2.8 - f5.6 in most cases but f8 is more useful if needed Landscapes..
