Which is the most impressive new compact luxury SUV?

We pit the 2018 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design against the Jaguar E-Pace P250 the 2018 BMW X2 sDrive20i and the Audi Q2 2.0 TFSI Quattro.

We, the Australian new car buying public, have made it clear what we want - compact SUVs and luxury cars. Luxury small SUV sales are up almost 20 per cent in 2018, so it’s no surprise that’s what car companies are focusing on when expanding their respective line-ups.

XC40 beats everthing in it's class time after time, well done Volvo!

Volvo is seriously on a roll. Looks fresh and funky as does the Jag E pace at a price big unfortunately.the Bmw is more like a hatch that the 1 series should of been. The Audi looks sharp and has a digital modern look. All are lovely but Volvo easily wins this one.

Volvo really does have a great package!

The Volvo is also one full size larger than the X2 and Q2. The Q2 feels like a jacked up Polo to me when i sit inside.

Volvo is giving serious competition to brands like BMW Audi and Mercedes. Can't wait for the V60.
Maybe the other brands has to offer more accessories or lower the price a bit. Here in Denmark many will go for the Volvo because of style and value for money

Fair and balanced review well done 👍🏽. For me I think that Jag looks phenomenal, particularly the exterior - if it’s got to be a compact SUV got to be that

I sure hope the XC40 translates into a great sales success because they deserve it, in every comparison I've seen it beats the competition fair and square.

Volvo XC40 is the complete package with the best features.
Jaguar the best most attention grabbing style, pity about the price and number of costly options.
BMW only looks alright in dark colours but not so in lighter hues. Interior it's weakest link.
Audi got trumped by Volvo in designing a better boxy/edgy design that actually gels and has the same weakness as Jaguar's costly option.

XC40 consistently winning these comparisons around the world - seems like a great car. However one big inconsistency is the reviewers view on the dynamics of the E-pace. This reviewer says ‘most dynamic of bunch, truely fitting a Jaguar’ whereas a lot of reviews ( many from UK publications) are saying the opposite - I.e. disappointing to drive, and not fitting of the Jaguar ethos. In fact I see Matt from CarWow stated in their latest comparison the XC40 was better dynamically than the E-pace

I have seen many comparison tests involving the XC40, and it wins hands down on every occasion, because it does everything so well, I don't get the Audi, or BMW, because they are not true SUVs, simply because they are too low, I would say they are slightly jacked up station wagons, or estate cars (in the UK ).

I like the E-Pace but I think Jaguar did a fantastic job with the F-Pace instead. It is difficult to justify for the E-pace higher sticker price (no apple car play, no android car play, cheap materials, poor mpg, sub par engines, sluggish infotainment). Ian Callum does a decent job with the design but Jaguar needs to step back and tweak lot of different things to bring it back to competition. Jaguar seriously need to work on their pricing and if they want to be called a premium brand they should use high end material (leather, wood) to make the cabin look much better. You cannot compete with merc, bmw and audi with substandard materials. Another thing, they might have got much better with reliability from where they were under FORD but it still needs lot of other detailing to gain customer confidence. People whoever wants to buy a Jaguar, the first question they ask before anything else is it looks fantastic but how reliable is Jaguar even though with a 5 yr/60 K warranty

Volvo maybe the best out of the lot but time will tell about the cheap Chinese parts reliability even though manufactured in Sweden.

Personally I will pick the Jaguar I-Pace instead

The Volvo is my 1st choice it's such a nice looking car.then the Jag 2nd.the 2 Germans can do one.both hideous.

Very good comparison. 👏👏
The MY21 comprehensive downgrades for the XC40 will ruin its popularity. It has for me and I’m cancelling my order. The downgrades even extend to the keys. Well key, you only get one now! FFS. That’s cheap.
The UPGRADED X2 or X1 is a much better shout.
You mention CarPlay. Whilst BMW now add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Volvo want £300GBP.
Naughty, Naughty Volvo. Wag’s finger.

Jaguar is first for me, looks stunning. Volvo is a close second place. BMW and Audi are the usual dull German boxes.

Couldn’t agree more about the E-Pace the exterior looks odd and not very exciting to me and the interior is incredibly bland, dull and underwhelming. BMW and Volvo would be my 2 to choose from.
