Oppenheimer and Einstein could have never imagined the impact of their work. Truly a chilling reminder of the power we wield as humans.

Oppenheimer: “Albert? When I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world...”

Einstein: “I remember it well. What of it?.”

“I believe we did.”

I watched the first three episodes last night, and I think it's one of the best documentaries on the development, use and aftermath of atomic weapons I've ever seen.

I can understand why some people might want to call it propaganda. But I like this documentary.

Previously, I could not enjoy documentaries and films about the atomic bomb made by Americans or British people. This is because the majority of the victims targeted by the American atomic bombings were civilians and non-combatants, including many women and children, and these works hardly touch upon how much suffering and death they endured (there are occasional cheap re-enactments, but I even think it would be better if those were not included), focusing instead on how "the atomic bombings led Japan to accept unconditional surrender, " often accompanied by a triumphant fanfare. This is followed by a standard explanation about the Cold War with ominous music, as if by formula. At most, they might venture to mention, "There has been debate over the necessity of the atomic bombings."

No matter how much it contributed to the end of the war, that act was a mass slaughter of civilians and clearly a war crime under the laws of war at the time. However, the victors are not judged, only the losers, which seems to be a constant in the world, but that's beside the point. I have always been dissatisfied that there has never been a documentary that presents this clear war crime as a "war crime."

So, I was truly amazed when I watched this documentary. In the first episode, it delves into the horrific damage in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, using footage from the time and many testimonies from Japanese victims, offering a genuinely compelling explanation. It clearly states that over 90% of Hiroshima, the target of the bombing, was a civilian area, and the attack was not on a military facility but on civilians. It even features an American speaker who mentions that there are views calling the atomic bombing a "war crime."

Moreover, this work highlights the fact that while Americans at the time recognized Germans as human beings, even though they were enemies, there was a racist view towards the Japanese, fueled by hatred, seeing them as subhuman, a subspecies, or an inferior race. It delves into the fact that it was this very groundwork of racism that made the atomic bombing possible.

This is truly remarkable. Despite being a theme of war and atomic bombs, this inconvenient truth that Americans have tended to avoid has been spoken by Americans themselves, something I have never seen in any work before.
Finally, in America, there has emerged media that calmly faces the facts of this matter and even seeks to communicate it to the world, and I am truly moved by this. It signifies either the maturation of Americans or a step forward into an era where the right things can be communicated correctly.

To everyone who's questioning the objectivity of this documentary, you should watch it. It's not biased. They interview people from the whole spectrum and explain a lot of the events in great detail. America is NOT glorified, in fact they do expose many of their wrongdoings

In general this is a really good documentary and as a Lithuanian I appreciate that a solid chapter of the show has been dedicated to tell what actually happened in the Baltics. I feel like due to lack of public information general Western population still hold the impression that Baltics were naturally a part of soviet union on their own discretion. Nope - we were invaded by military and forced to join them with the only alternative being wiped out of the map by overwhelming soviet army. Same as Poland, same as Chezoslovakia and others. The main difference is that we were officially integrated into the union, while other counties falling under the iron curtain a bit later were allowed to keep their historical names although were still controlled by stalin and his heirs. If there were a competition who hates russians the most, Baltics would qualify at least to a semi finals :)

It takes less than ten minutes for an “expert” to say US was the virtuous side for good in the Cold War while scenes of Vietnamese being slaughtered are playing. I seriously can’t tell if this is sarcasm or the creators are that stupid
Edit: so watching further I do give credit to creators for showing the horrific effects of the Hiroshima bomb. Very hard to watch, just like it’s supposed to be

If you haven't watch this, then don't comment. This documentary paints one of the most honest depictions of the world's powers by putting us all on an equal playing field, except for one country. The greatest country of political criminals to ever rule with fear. Guess who? And no, it's not Russia.

I hate these overly dramatic documentaries. They either skew information/history in the name of entertainment, or have an agenda.

This is one of the best docuseries I've ever watched on Netflix. It tells the full origin story of the Cold War and how the United States has always had a hand in geopolitics - Truly comprehensive and thought provoking!
