Had a business call me frantically about unknown persons on their wireless. They had never given out nor shared the wifi password and were so sure they were hacked. I found out remotely that an Amazon device had been connecting occasionally. They absolutely declared we have never had an Amazon device installed, nor do we have any such device now. The tension ratcheted up. I asked them to turn on all known wireless devices, they did, and nothing turned up. I asked them had they replaced any device in the recent past. Yes, a barely used TV. I asked them to turn that TV on. When they did, voila, the Amazon device appeared. It was the included Amazon app on the new TV. The old TV had no such app. What a waste of time, money and overwrought emotional stress for them. I reminded them to never give out the wireless password to the staff network, but giving out the (newly created Vlan) guest password was okay.

Bitdefender makes a free tool that inspects the network an tells you when a new device has logged into your wifi. it will also scan the device an tell you if it's safe or malware an will offer you ways to deal with it. It's called Bitdefender Home Scanner.

Would the MAC filtering still apply if for e.g. the device was connecting through a wifi extender or would i have to block it via the wifi extender settings?

Thanks for the info, Brian. My PCs are connected to a non-wifi router via cat 6e cable so I think I'm safe. 👍

is there also a possibility to see who is registered in a network by not being registered yourself and only having the IP of a registered user?

There are a few ways to see who is connected to your Wi-Fi network:

Router Control Panel: You can access your router's control panel by typing its IP address into your web browser. Once you're logged in, you should be able to see a list of all connected devices.

Command Prompt: Open the Command Prompt on your Windows computer and type "arp -a" (without the quotes). This will display a list of all IP addresses connected to your network, along with their corresponding MAC addresses.

Third-party software: There are various third-party software programs available that can scan your network and give you a list of all connected devices. Some examples include Fing, Wireless Network Watcher, and Who Is On My Wifi.

Smartphone apps: Many smartphones have apps that can scan your network and show you a list of connected devices. Examples of such apps are Fing and Who Is On My WiFi.

It's important to note that some devices may be connected to your network without you realizing it, such as a neighbor's phone or tablet that is picking up your Wi-Fi signal.
