No need to carry around much cash. Debit and credit cards work just fine as well visa, maestro and American express etc just notify your local bank that you'll be leaving for South Africa and they'll sort everything out for you there. E-commerce is also huge this side from everything like groceries to cosmetic to electronics etc

I've been to South Africa three times. I've found it better to trade your money here in the States before traveling to South Africa for many reasons. Not everyone is honest and will charge a higher amount to trade your dollar into rands. Everyone has their preference though.
