Sophocles is one of the three tragedians of ancient Greece whose plays have survived. His first plays were composed after or contemporaneously with those of Aeschylus, and before or contemporaneously with those of Euripides. Only seven of Sophocles' plays have been preserved in their entirety: Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus. During the religious festivals of the Lenaea and Dionysia, Sophocles was the most celebrated playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens for nearly fifty years. He participated in thirty contests, won twenty-four of them, and was never ranked lower than second. Aeschylus won thirteen contests and was occasionally defeated by Sophocles, while Euripides won four.
