Euripides was a classical Athens tragedian. He is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived in their entirety, along with Aeschylus and Sophocles. Some ancient scholars attributed to him 95 plays, but the Suda says it was no more than 92. Eighteen or nineteen of these have survived in their entirety (Rhesus is suspect). Most of his other plays have numerous fragments (some substantial). More of his plays have survived intact than those of Aeschylus and Sophocles combined, partly because his popularity grew as theirs declined, and he became, along with Homer, Demosthenes, and Menander, a cornerstone of ancient literary education in the Hellenistic Age.
