A quick solution to try for sticky valves after you have tried oiling them.

As I say in the video if you are still having issues seek advice from your teacher or a brass repair specialist.

Sometimes you need to stretch out the spring a tiny bit. I had to do it to my 3 valve spring. It’s been 20 years and my valves are still good as new.

Thank you so much! I’ve been dealing with sticky valves all marching band season and this really helped!

Thank you so much! My directors AND my mom (who is a director) kept telling me that it was because of my hand position, but I knew that it was more than that. Thanks!

I just borrowed a baritone. Valve 1 was very sticky. It was terrible. I cleaned it, oiled it, but it didn't work. But I had also messed with the oil of the other valves. And I noticed that the oil was making them more sticky.

That's when I noticed that too much oil is a thing. At least with the bicycle chain oil I used. It's a thin oil, but probably not very thin.

I took the valves out, and cleaned only the valves, and left the residual oil in the cylinders. I cannot remove all the oil from the cylinder by cleaning only the valve, so there will be very little oil left in the cylinder. As long as there's some oil, it should be fine. Because the contact area is very wide, the parts are not under very high contact forces, and the parts are very smooth. This means, any little oil there will be trapped between parts, and parts may have almost no chance of rubbing each other. On the other hand, oils have very high cohesion and reasonably high adhesion. So, if there's too much oil, it acts like a weak glue.

My 3rd valve was great. I messed up that one. Then, fixed all of them. When I played it, I had no problems at all 😍

BTW, I noticed that springs of valve 1 and 2 were shorter than valve 3. The wire thicknesses were the same. So I stretched the short springs just enough to make them approximately the same lenght as valve 3 spring. It was not a huge change for springs, so I don't expect them to get weak because of that. But this change makes them slightly stronger.

Trumpet valves that have tight tolerances become sticky when lint from rags builds up. Wash the pistons and air dry them without using rags or microfiber cloth.
