WHY You DON'T NEED TO SHOOT MANUAL mode to Take BETTER Photos!

DSLR tutorial. Mirrorless tutorial. To take better photos people told me to ditch Auto on my camera to shoot Manual. Today I want to say don't shoot in Manual - don't shoot in Auto - save time - focus on what matters in an image - shoot in these camera modes to focus on taking better photos - not just having more "technical" skills.

Aperture priority + auto iso and exposure compensation for the win. I use this loads taking portraits. Manual is good for certain scenarios. Maybe on a beach where the lighting is going to the same all around, only changing when you go into the shade.

I shot full manual when starting out to force myself to learn how the different components of an image come together, but once I learnt that, I fell back to Aperture Priority and haven't really changed since

I shoot manual mostly but sometimes use aperture priority. If my gf uses my camera she puts it in auto mode and her photos look really good. I think it's because she's just got a natural eye for composition

I just did my first photo shoot and used Aperture Priority! I did portraits, full body and group shots! My subjects were ladies who were having fun and partying! We laughed and had a great time! Why was I so relaxed and having so much fun? I trusted myself to set the F stop and then had my Sony a7iii in Aperture priority. The photos came out with even skin tones...lovely soft background details that were not blurred out completely as they wanted these pretty flowers that were purple to be there a bit. I used my 35mm wide lens and before I left for this shoot I practiced on my husband. The 35mm in that lighting achieved the results they wanted! The 55mm and the 85mm blew out too many of the details. I had so much fun posing them and positioning them in the best natural light...I was able to do more with less stress as my light changed 5 times in a short span of time! For photographers first starting out, this can boost your confidence and allow for more experience! Then I went home and after a few days, I took a portrait of my husband in Manual mode out back by our Jasmine with my Nikon D5300 next....it achieved the same type of look as Aperture Priority mode that I set on my sony! You can see the sparkle in his green eyes...every hair...its amazing! The flowers are softer but you can still see them...So I compared manual and Aperture Priority and if you do that correctly on A P, you will get great results! My client is thrilled!

Shutter priority, using it indoors helps . I never used it, then started to and the photos came out good. It helps also what time of day you shoot, just when the sun is going down or in the morning, makes a difference.

I use Aperture Priority when I want to control depth of field and Shutter Priority when I want to control motion blur. I do shoot manual too but not all the time. I shoot mainly outdoors so most of the time I do not need to adjust ISO and just leave it on 100. Occasionally I may need to adjust it but never use AUTO ISO because I want to have full control over ISO even though I can limit the AUTO ISO range.

Most of the time I use Av on my Canon 80D for shooting photos, !BUT! a few months ago I "discovered" C1 and C2 function for shooting videos! And it's a game changer! Because I set C1 for 23.976fps, minimum aperture on fastest lens, 1/50 shutter speed and 100 ISO ..then I just use ND filter to balance exposure - so I have that cinematic look in one turning of wheel! Amazing! :)
C2 I have for slow motion: 60fps, 1/125 shutter and auto ISO...
I don't have to go to the menu and set MOV HiBitRate or MP4 for 60fps every time I need to switch it! Brilliant!
For some people it is obvious and worthless advice, but I think that some of you will save a time by this.
Good job, Pierre!!

Aperture priority and adjusting ISO for night time

You just answered all my questions :)! I think manual mode is so confusing for me since I am just a beginner!

Aperture Priority mode for me > 80% of the time. I set my max ISO to 3200, EV to -1 (I'd rather bump up the shadows in post than high ISO), and no limit to SS. I recently started using full metering mode instead of spot metering mode I'm still trying to figure which one gets me better results. I don't like how spot metering will sometimes give me blown out highlights and high ISO if the subject is backlit.

BTW I love the fact that you have the balls to make this video. When I first started photography everyone said that you have to shoot full manual and I missed a bunch of shots. I then switched to full auto because I was frustrated until I started messing around with other settings.

I completely agree, using hybrid mode, that is aperture or shutter priority will allow you to apply creativity instead of wasting time in adjust light along with exposure compensation and flash compensation

I actually started with Aperture priority but then transitioned into manual mode. I think you're right, it really depends on the situation and how much time you have on your hands!

Thank you for the video! I totally agree. What matters most really is composition, and above all getting a shot as opposed to missing it!

I use AP 90% of the time and manual with auto ISO for fast action shoots. Great content Pierre. Love from Canada <3

"are you a Manuel shooter? are you an aperture priority shooter? are you confused?" 8:12 made me laugh idk why

I think P in some cameras is fully automatic, in with Canon, as you've described, when in a hurry (Kids and critters!) it can allow for rapidly changing various parameters (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and can be very useful.

I’ve started going manual and can’t look back. But I do see your points. Working the settings can take me a few seconds and I lose the shot! I’ll give av a try. Great vid.

Great video!, thanks for the tips, my favorite modes are, in this order. Shutter priority, aperture priority, program, and manual, don't care for auto. ( only in emergencies )

Wow thats awesome. I always used manual only because I didn't understand the other modes. I didn't know how to use them! You gave a really good explanation. You're right, it would be a lot faster to do it this way, I wouldn't miss so many moments! Thank you!
