To Autotune or Not to Autotune: The Debate on Pitch Correction

Autotune and other pitch correction tools (Melodyne, Newtone) are pop music's biggest weapon when it comes to making singers sound good in the studio and now even live! I want to discuss the controversy and implications of both paths and whether one is better than the other!

A bad singer will sound bad with or without Autotune, pitch correction is needed to make a song sound perfect though personally I believe a singer should keep practicing to hit each note correctly so that use of Autotune is either minimal or completely not required at all

This is such a well thought out perspective! I couldn't agree more! Discovering your voice w/o autotune and developing your voice to become a more skillful singer is so so important. Shortcuts may pay off financially - but to attain some level of respect/praise goes beyond anything technology could ever do for you.

I don't care if it's a background vocal but if you're autotuning your lead vocal and everything else I don't agree

I agree... I'm working on an EP right now and man, trying to get my vocals right for this RnB track are definitely time consuming. I may need the pitch correction here and there. But it doesn't mean I should use that shortcut all the way through.

Auto-tune as a polish and not a brand new cup. So true. I think singers should definitely get well acquainted with their own voice and how it works instead of just slapping a "filter"...quite literally, on their vocals.
There should be a general rule...if a singer can't reproduce in a live setting what they recorded in the studio, maybe think twice? Of course I'm not saying it should be perfection every time they perform live, but at least somewhat similar.
I do agree with your pros though. Saving time and money in the studio is always a major incentive.

I looove this video! You made some amazing points and the entire video was kinda thought-provoking, so here's my opinion on the topic:
I think there's a big issue with pitch correction tools when the singer using it can't recreate the same vocals live and it's not about singing in perfect pitch all the time - who is that person anyways xD - but rather about being able to execute the same runs, hit the same notes etc.
Nowadays, autotune and other tools have become so inevitable, it's just kinda a part of making a record really...
And I get it, people want to sound as good as they possibly can on their record.
So, I don't really have an issue with autotune, however, I wouldn't care if singers showed more of their imperfections and - basically - the real dear on the album either!
That's just my take on it though :)

After YEARS of singing and recording/performing live without autotune and pitch correction tools, I feel like I've more than payed my dues as a vocalist. I've proved that I have a voice and that I take singing seriously. I use it when I record now for that very reason. It is such a time saver. Especially on pop songs and background vocals.

It doesn't even "save time". That argument makes no sense, because you save even more time by not using it. You just record your vocals to the best of your ability and leave it at that, without lying to the listener and taking credit for something you didn't do. If you're worried you won't be as successful, well guess what? You're not entitled to be successful. Either get more talent, get out of the game, of present yourself as you actually are. Nobody needs you oversaturating the music industry with more and more fake trash.
