Darnielle & co.'s most thematically focused and hardest-hitting project since Goths, but the results are still a little mixed.

We get it Anthony, you enjoy music, you don’t have to keep posting about it every day.

This album was a solid 8.7 for me. Obviously, it's subjective, but speaking purely objectively, I'm right and you're wrong.

Politely requesting a worst to best on this band!

As a TMG super fan, thought it was the most exciting energetic album of theirs in a while

If you look closely, you’ll notice that the Mountain Goats actually named themselves after the one and only GOAT of hip hop (NAV)

How is it that sometimes you miss so bad with the least favorite tracks.. Hostages is a banger

Please do a classic review of The Smiths “The Queen Is Dead”.

Definitely their most consistent record since goths- just saw them touring it, not sure everything translates live, but Wage War Get Rich Die Handsome stands up there with the bands best bangers tbh

I’m glad someone else agrees with me about the track bleed out- it really grips my attention! I liked the album, but the closer stands out so much to me.

Just saw them live about a week ago. They did excellent crowd work and the few mistakes they made were more funny than annoying. John also just spoke to the audience a lot, and he was funnier than I would’ve expected.

Fair review. I think it’s the best of their 3 most recent, and I think the title track is one of their best songs overall.

I think I liked Dark In Here and Getting Into Knives better than this album, but the songs I do like from this one (Training Montage, Wage Wars, Guys on Every Corner, Bleed Out) I really really like. And the others are all enjoyable depending on my mood. I've spent the last two-ish years getting into the Mountain Goats and I've been pleased to see how strongly John Darnielle feels for the art he makes. It's very inspiring. Even when I don't vibe totally with one of his albums or songs I can respect fully what he's doing with it.

Album's a 7/10 for me

Ah yes, the band paradoxically targeted towards LGBTQ+ college students and gen X parents at the same time

Going to see them live this week, incredibly excited

While there were some highlights for me in the lyrics, the instrumentation all sort of ran together. I prefer the highly varied soundscape of Beat the Champ even if Bleed Out tells, perhaps, a more cogent narrative across the album's length rather than only feeling like a menagerie of similar themes and imagery.

Would you ever do a mountain goats worst to best or tier list? I’ve always kind of had my takes and I’d love to hear yours

Disagree as always with your Mountain Goats opinions but glad to see you continue to cover their projects and interested to hear your perspective.

Everytime I find music and think ‘I’m so happy I found it by myself’ melon posts a review a few days later and now I feel unoriginal
