By the way in the US "Made in" means 80% made in and "assembled in" Means we took all our parts and put them together here.

As a Canadian who lives and grew up in the northernmost city over a million in North America (actually one of the places Errolson Hugh went to school) to parents who were always really into hiking and camping, I can say with certainty that the trinity of Columbia, The Northface and Arcteryx are all brands that you will find in like 99% of outdoorsy people's wardrobes here and for good reason. In fact they were all largely considered 'dad brands' here up until pretty recently for their ubiquity in the camping world.

Anyways my favourite jacket and most of my favourite pieces I own are actually And Wander so I'm glad you mentioned them! Great looking and high quality stuff, and there's a store within walking distance of me that annually blows it out at like -60% off so I've acquired a few nice bags and such that way as well.

4:30 I’m glad you’re putting this info out there. I do some copywriting for a small eco-friendly technical womens outerwear brand in Seoul, and I’ve since learned that fake YKK zips are indeed a thing. Not only are they worse in quality, they aren’t tested for dangerous heavy metals. Same thing with snaps and other metal hardware.

I'm a big fan of Krakatau for jackets and coats: high-performance minimalist style at a reasonable price.

I picked up a Haven bellum (basically M65 style) jacket in white goretex pro and it looks sharp as hell. And its for some reason half price of the black version. It got marked down like $100 like a week after I bought it and I emailed haven and they gave me an in store credit for the price difference. Shout out to Haven!

I almost never do these bits of engagement bait…but what the hell…my favourite jackets right now are;

1. Chester Perry Metropolis series Co-Ted Explorer

2. Chester Perry Metropolis Tracery PRILFT. (Both have really interesting GD processes and the way they catch the light is sublime.)

3. Left Hand Elvo anorak

4. ST-95 Drogue smock 2.0

5. RÆBURN air brake anorak

6. SS23 Stone Island taupe/rust ice jacket. The thing is absolutely beautiful if not particularly wearable day to day.

7. The Vollebak Full Metal Jacket is amazing aesthetically. I feel like an astronaut every time I put it on.

8. The RÆBURN x Timberland puffer parka, it’s a stone cold banger and I wore it almost the entire winter.

Notable mention goes to the SS23 Nike Tech-Pack Gore-Tex field jacket. Been wearing it almost a year now and it’s incredible for everyday use.

As far as jackets go, Neighborhood is my go to. Sooo many cool options in all ranges. Got 5 of them and I love em all 🫶🏻 Made In Japan, nice cuts, always good materials and sharp design. Nemen is also good if you’re going flashy. Really drooling over the Acronym jackets, but havent «gone there» yet.

I have the Enshadower N14 Coat and feel it is pretty well made with a cool design, nice pockets and waterproof features around the 200 range

over the past year I've been wearing almost exclusively Beyond and Oros jackets, Beyond is super functional and more typical outdoor performance styles; Oros is definitely Techware influenced and I think the design are great

My favorite jacket that I currently own is probably the J101-GT from ACR. The only “downside” is that…well, I picked the White one; so now I gotta deal with the consequences of it being said color 🤣

I currently wear a lot of Blåkläder, which is a danish workwear brand, the designs are functional but the clothes feel and look really nice as well. Other than that I have a frilufts rain jacket that weighs next to nothing but has the highest water resistance I have ever encountered on a jacket below 700€...and it only cost me 199.

Tbh my favorite jacket is a surplus US Navy greatcoat that I took the faux-fur lining out of. It's got the cool factor of a long coat, but with the military credentials that mean it's actually practical. I almost never wear it.

re: Ideal zips

they’re good quality, at least on the same level of mid-high end YKK zips in my experience (i wouldn’t say i’ve owned any that feel as nice as an excella). i think they started as a military grade hardware manufacturer (my memory could be completely off base, though) and i’d say comparatively the zips i’ve seen from them are beefier/heavier overall, especially with how the action feels.
