Autonomous Snake Robot EELS Explores Extraterrestrial Surfaces
This video introduces:NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed a self-propelled autonomous snake robot called EELS for exploring extraterrestrial terrains. The robot's propulsion system enables it to boldly explore areas that have never been explored by robots before. Scientists say that EELS' autonomous operation capability is crucial, and it must be able to solve problems on its own without relying on human assistance. To accomplish this, EELS uses four pairs of stereoscopic cameras and LiDAR to create a 3D map of its surroundings and incorporates 48 small motors into its structure to enhance its flexibility and adaptability. EELS is inspired by the search for life in the frigid depths of Enceladus, and the robot snake can be used to explore Mars' polar caps or deep ice fissures on Earth.
